Jessica Ross and her partner Treveon Isaiah Taylor, Sr., will stop at nothing to get justice for their decapitated son — who died during childbirth after the gynecologist who helped deliver him allegedly "negligently" applied "excessive traction" that resulted in death.

The night of July 9, 2023, what was supposed to be one of the happiest nights in the couple's relationship, turned into a nightmare after a nasty, painful childbirth resulted in the death of what would have been their first-born child, Treveon Isaiah Taylor, Jr.

What's worse is the couple didn't even find out their son had been decapitated until much later, claiming that Dr. Tracey St. Julian and the hospital, the Southern Regional Medical Center located just south of Atlanta, Georgia, had tried to conceal the true manner of death to the 20-year-old would-be parents.

Now, it's up to the local authorities investigating the couple's claims, the same ones who labeled the death a homicide, to determine whether there's any criminal liability to be had in the case. A homicide means the death was caused by another person, but not that it was necessarily intentional.

A lawsuit the couple filed in August lays bare their claims and slams the facility and the doctor involved as the now-21-year-old mother stated, according to CNN : "I just want justice for my baby boy."

Ross added that she's "hurt" and "hurt bad" by St. Julian and said the doctor "didn't show no remorse" after what the couple claims she did. Taylor Sr. said it boils down to the doctor and the hospital lying to them and stated that he wants the facility shut down. The hospital has denied all claims of wrongdoing.

The medical examiner's office in Clayton County, Georgia, reported the cause of death as a "fracture-dislocation with complete transection, upper cervical (C1-C2) spine and spinal cord" that was caused by "shoulder dystocia, arrest of labor and fetal entrapment in the birth canal," a news release reported, mentioning also that pregnancy-induced diabetes and the premature rupturing of various membranes was also to blame and contributed to the baby's death.

So, what does that mean? Shoulder dystocia is an incredibly rare condition in which a baby's shoulders get trapped behind the mother's pelvic bones during delivery, preventing the poor baby from properly exiting the birth canal. That's where the "excessive traction" came in as St. Julian allegedly attempted to pull the baby's head a little bit too hard, breaking its neck and killing it.

A Cesarian section operation was completed at about 3am local time the following morning, as the birth was still not managed, and then the baby was reportedly placed behind glass for the parents to look at but not touch — without any scrap of evidence available to the naked eye that would suggest decapitation.

In a statement to CNN on Tuesday this week, Brian Byars, director of the Clayton County Medical Examiner's Office, stated: "I have never witnessed anything like this before. No one in our office has seen anything like this. Everyone we have consulted has never seen a situation like this before. I find it very unusual that the hospital didn't contact our office due to the amount of trauma that was involved in this incident."

The Clayton County Police Department in tandem with the local District Attorney's office is investigating the case and will attempt to determine where liability falls, if there is any. The couple stated that it was the funeral home they had contacted, the Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home in Atlanta, that told them about the disturbing nature of baby Treveon's condition. The home's general manager called it "very disturbing," documents reveal.

Sylviana Watkins, the general manager at the home, told CNN that she received the baby wrapped in sheets so that none of it was visible, then almost immediately noticed the decapitation and began to wonder why the baby had arrived from the hospital and not the medical examiner's office, as she believed it should have.

The lawyers for the family have stated that they believe the decapitation and all the circumstances surrounding it are "bizarre" and "diabolical" and that neglect reigned supreme during the delivery, including St. Julian's failure to perform a C-section "in a timely and proper manner," Dr. Roderick Edmond, one of the parents' attorneys, told CNN.

He added that the hospital pushed the family to cremate the baby, wouldn't let them get an autopsy and prevented them from seeing the child.

St. Julian's lawyer, however, completely rejected "the assertion that the injury suffered ruing this tragic event happened before the demise of the baby," adding, according to CNN, that "the official autopsy performed by the GBI did not classify a manner of death and stated that there was no sign of life upon delivery."

The lawyer added that both the baby's and the mother's lives were in danger, and St. Julian did everything she could to save the mother once it became clear that the baby was deceased. The attorney also alleges that the decapitation occurred after the baby had died, not before. "Although tragic, that rare outcome has been reported in the medical literature and can happen in the absence of any wrongdoing by the physician which is the case here," the lawyer said in a statement.

St. Julian is still practicing at both Southern Regional Medical Center and one other hospital, the Georgia Composite Medical Board revealed. The Southern Regional Medical Center via a spokesperson said that it is unable to comment on the case "due to current litigation," CNN reported.

Ross is now urging any nurses present for her delivery to come forward and detail what they saw, adding that she absolutely believes criminal charges are deserved in her case and that she hopes justice is served.

In a statement released amid the legal chaos, the hospital said: "Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the family and all those impacted by this tragic event. Our prayers also remain with the dedicated team of physicians, nurses and staff at Southern Regional Medical Center who cared for this patient. Our commitment is to provide compassionate, quality care to every single patient, and this loss is heartbreaking."
