Gary Lineker has confirmed he will not host this week's Match of the Day after coming down with a "rotten cold".

The former England international has hosted BBC's flagship highlights programme for more than 20 years and remains one of the most recognisable faces in the footballing landscape. However, this weekend's show will look a little different, with Lineker announcing to followers on social media that he has been 'silenced' with illness.

He said: "Some good news for some: I’ve been silenced….with a rotten cold that seems to be lasting forever. Hate missing hosting @BBCMOTD but I’ll be watching".

Mark Chapman, the host of Match of the Day 2, will replace Lineker on Saturday night's show which will air on BBC One at 10.30pm. Chapman and guests will review highlights from seven Premier League matches, including games involving Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Lineker is one of the BBC's highest paid on-air talents - earning around £1.3million from the corporation last year. Now, 63, the ex-Tottenham striker has two years left on his BBC deal with questions over his long-term future.

Just last year, Lineker was temporarily taken off air after breaching impartiality guidelines, but was quickly reinstated after a backlash from high-profile colleagues in the industry. He was recently asked about his plans for the future, having launched a hugely successful podcasting company outside of his commitments to the BBC.

After being asked about his long-term plans, Lineker left all options on the table: "I don't know. I've still got almost two years left on my contract. So it's too early to contemplate that at the moment.

"But I mean I love doing Match of the Day, but, you know, obviously what happens with... football rights and things like that, will determine things and you know, things change."

In 2019, Lineker stepped down from his role hosting Champions League football for BT Sport, instead wanting to spend more time with his family.

Earlier this season, Match of the Day confirmed Ian Wright would be leaving his position, having been a mainstay alongside Lineker for a number of years. "Ultimately, it's time to do a few more different things with my Saturdays," Wright said.

In response, Lineker said: "It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work alongside you, Ian. One of my favourite people on the planet. Farewell my friend."
