Steam Next Fest is happening this week, and here are my picks for the indie demos you should be keeping an eye on.

Running for this week, Steam Next Fest is a way for indie developers to showcase the best and brightest of upcoming releases. I've been checking out demos across the week and have compiled my personal favourites, and you'll definitely want to check these out before the week is over.

You'll need to head to the Steam Next Fest hub on the Steam store to check these out or search them up. Some game demos will only be available for the week, however, so if these interest you, get to it ASAP.

Anger Foot

Kicking things off is my favourite demo of the Steam Next Fest – Anger Foot. Coming from Free Lives (known for Broforce, Gorn, and Genital Jousting) Anger Foot mixes the hard-hitting gameplay of Hotline Miami with the signature style of the studio.

While guns are available in Anger Foot, the best weapon at your disposal is undoubtedly the titular foot. Kicking allows you to knock enemies on their asses, kick grenades at them in mid-air, and even answer phone calls. You can even destroy an attack helicopter by sheer foot force.

Angerfoot is set to launch sometime in 2024.

Crow Country

You wouldn't look at SFB Games – who is best known for the adorable Nintendo Switch launch title Snipperclips – and think they would make a dope horror game, but Crow Country proves that appearances can be deceiving. Crow Country is heavily inspired by PS1 survival horror classics Resident Evil and Silent Hill, as you play as Mara who is investigating the Crow Country theme park following the disappearance of its founder.

The game employs a gorgeous aesthetic reminiscent of blocky PS1 models while piping in an atmosphere that rivals modern horror games. The brief dip into the game with this demo has me itching for more.

Crow Country is set to launch sometime in 2024.

Pepper Grinder

We played Pepper Grinder back at Gamescom 2023, and included it in our best indies list at that show. Months down the line Pepper Grinder is still as exciting to play as it was then.

Pepper Grinder feels almost like a lost Game Boy Advance classic thanks to its lovely art style and fast-paced platforming. However, it's the main gimmick of using a drill to zoom through the environment that really makes the game stand out.

Crow Country is set to launch sometime in 2024.

Children of the Sun

Kings of the indie scene Devolver Digital are making another appearance on this list with the cult-slaying shooter Children of the Sun. In this game, you play as a sniper scouting out various enemy camps, but the catch is, you only have one bullet.

Once you take out an enemy or obstacle your bullet can be redirected while it travels, and you'll need to carefully plan your shot to take out the whole camp. If anything it's more of a puzzle game than a shooter.

Children of the Sun doesn't have a release date as of right now.

Beat Slayer

One of the biggest surprises of 2020 was SuperGiant's incredible roguelike Hades. Meanwhile, one of the biggest surprises of 2023 was the rhythm-based brawler Hi-Fi Rush. Mix them both together, and Beat Slayer is what you get.

Taking place in a dystopian version of 90's Berlin this roguelike has you beat to the beat as you take out robot hordes. While you can attack at will, smashing and dodging to the beat will power you up, leading to you getting even more powerful attacks at your disposal.

Beat Slayer is set to launch on April 4, 2024.

Mullet Mad Jack

One of my favourite guilty pleasure movies is Jason Statham's Crank series, in which the main character has to keep himself in the action or his heart will fail. Mullet Mad Jack takes that concept and pairs it with a gorgeous 80s/90s anime aesthetic and gives it the truly dystopian concept of your heart being powered by likes.

In Mad Mullet Jack you have 10 seconds to complete a level before your heart explodes. The catch is, that as you blast enemies or just do cool things in general, you'll garner more likes from the viewing audience, and your heart will keep pumping. Mad Mullet Jack pairs an excellent concept, amazing aesthetic and great shooting together to create something that has my full attention going forward.

Mullet Mad Jack doesn't have a release date as of right now.
