Love it or loathe it, Marmite has long ignited fierce debate. Now the popular British spread has fuelled further discussion, after fans began conspiring theories that the paste has been changed.

When you become obsessed with a food item or snack it is devastating when it doesn't quite hit the spot the same. Marmite lovers have heard "disturbing" rumours that the thickness of the toast spread has been manipulated. On social media one individual said the product is "more runny than ever before", while another claimed it is "less spreadable" than usual. One Reddit user added: "Lately, the jars seem to be extra tacky or think and it is difficult to spread."

"The new jar seems gloppier," one individual said on Mumsnet.

"New one you can almost cut it, think the flavour has changed somewhat as well," said another Reddit user. "It's thicker, harder to spread," said one other online.

One furious individual wrote: "Marmite just need to admit they changed the recipe, apologise and change it back. Everyone knows it."

Another Marmite fan took to Mumsnet and commented: "Yes I noticed that! It’s a really stiff texture and hard to spread. Useless for me, because I have to have gluten free bread which is more crumbly, and it just tears it to shreds."

Kieran Maguire's post on X (formerly Twitter) raked in over 20,000 views after he said: "I’m hearing disturbing rumours that there's been a change to the @Marmite recipe and it’s now more runny than before. How anyone can tinker with perfection is beyond me."

But Marmite bosses insist the product has not changed but there is a reason that you may noticed a small change in the product.

Speaking to the Mirror, Marmite brand manager, Laura Iliffe, said: "The main ingredient of Marmite is yeast, which is a natural ingredient. Each batch of yeast may vary slightly and so the Marmite may also vary slightly in texture and flavour, although it is still within its specification."

She added: "I can confirm that the recipe for Marmite basically remains unchanged and what you have described sounds like simple, natural variation."

Last month fans were left devastated after it was confirmed, for the seventh time, that Walkers were ditching the Marmite flavour. In a statement to fans, Walkers warned that the flavour will "slowly disappear from shelves".

They said: "We are very sorry to disappoint fans of Marmite flavour Walkers crisps with this news. We know many crisp lovers will hate to see this Walker's flavour go. This change will enable us to focus our efforts on making more of the flavours crisp fans love the most," as reported by The Metro.
