It's been announced sports broadcaster David Morrow has been diagnosed with brain cancer, which has prompted him to have stepped down from his radio show in Australia.

The commentator, 71, is understood to have been absent recently from the Continuous Call Team on radio station 2GB, which is based in Sydney. It's since been shared that he's undergoing treatment following a cancer diagnosis.

The news was shared by his colleague Ray Hadley, 69, on his morning show on Thursday. The host told listeners that he'd been asked to make the announcement on behalf of David, whose decades-long career has included working for ABC.

Ray said: "I've been asked to many an announcement on behalf of one of my dearest colleagues and his family." He continued: "About a month ago, David advised his mates on the Continuous Call Team and management of Nine Radio that he would be retiring immediately from all duties."

The radio host said: "That came as a major shocked. Then we find out after a couple of serious incidents during the off-season David had been diagnosed with brain cancer." Ray went on to pay tribute to his colleague on the show.

He commented: "David is not just a work colleague, he's a dear friend to everyone at this station and this network. And while he dealt with the original shock of the diagnosis, we all thought it was best to offer our love and support, and let him, Chris and his daughters deal with that rather shocking news as a family."

Ray said that there had since been "some media interest" once David began his treatment. He added: "David and the family decided they wanted me to break the news, not only our media colleagues, but to millions of listeners David has connected with in a career that's lasted more than 45 years."

He continued: "Thirsty, as he's widely known, has started radiation and chemo. It's a tough time, obviously." Ray added: "I just want to share with everyone how much I actually love this fella and why I love this fellow broadcaster so much."

Sharing his thoughts, he told listeners earlier this week: "He's a man of some substance. It goes without saying he's Australia's most versatile sports broadcaster." Ray continued by discussing aspects of David's decades-long career.

He noted that David began his career reporting on cricket and rugby. Ray shared that his colleague has since covered eight Olympic Games, specialising in track and field event. He added that David's "been a mentor to many". David is understood to have joined the team at radio station 2GB back in 2015. He had previously provided sports coverage on TV and radio for ABC, having joined the network in 1980.
