The millionaire property tycoon married to former Neighbours star Holly Valance has backed Labour coming to power - just two days after attending a Liz Truss speech.

Nick Candy said it's "probably time for a change" and praised opposition leader Keir Starmer in a surprise switch. It comes just over 48 hours after he was seen at the launch of a right-wing Tory faction, the Popular Conservatives.

His decision comes in contrast to remarks made by Ms Valance on Tuesday when she said people become more right wing as they get older. She also voiced her admiration for Ms Truss, Sir Jacob Rees Mogg and Tory loudmouth Lee Anderson.

During her speech at the event, Ms Truss claimed the country is full of "secret" conservatives, but her words appear not to have convinced Mr Candy.

Speaking to Bloomberg's In the City podcast, the businessman criticised Conservative infighting, with rival groups piling pressure on Rishi Sunak. He went on to describe Mr Starmer as a "a decent man with good values and good morals”. Mr Candy has donated a whopping £290,000 to Tory coffers, Electoral Commission figures reveal, while his company Candy & Candy, gave an additional £73,706 since 2009.

In 2022 The Mirror reported he and Ms Valance attended a lavish £120,000 a plate dinner with Boris Johnson and other cabinet members including Ms Truss, Kwasi Kwarteng, Therese Coffey and Sajid Javid.

Mr Candy married actress and pop star Ms Valance in 2012, in a £3 million ceremony in Beverly Hills. He is a billionaire and prominent Conservative party supporter and donor. He backed Tory Shaun Bailey’s unsuccessful campaign to be Mayor of London in 2021 - and was pictured at the notorious lockdown rule-breaking Christmas Party held in Conservative HQ that December.

His comments about Tory infighting come after his wife gave a gushing interview to GB News saying lefties have "c*** ideas". Ms Valance, 40, said in a TV interview after the event: "Everyone starts off as a leftie and then wakes up at some point after you start making money, working, trying to run a business, trying to buy a home and then realise what c*** ideas they all are. And then you go to the right."

She made the remark at the launch of the new group, which saw Ms Truss accuse her colleagues of failing to stand up for conservative values. She went on to claim environmentalists and LGBTQ rights campaigners are "extremists" and repackaged Communists.

At the same event former Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson claimed only the "odd weirdo" raises green issues on the doorstep. Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage watched on as Tory rising star Mhairi Fraser, who recently described Donald Trump as "incredibly refreshing", lashed out at Rishi Sunak's proposed smoking ban.
