The next big PS5 and PC live service shooter has arrived and is proving more popular than expected, with matchmaking is proving an issue for some.
Third-person cooperative squad shooter Helldivers 2 has now launched simultaneously on both PS5 and PC, with the official Helldivers 2 release time now having lifted across the world. As is the case with most online multiplayer games when they first release, however, it’s been a smooth day-one experience for most. But this hasn’t stopped a small selection from encountering errors. In the case of this Helldivers sequel, the main problem in question is the “failed to join lobby” error, whereby the Sony-published game is proving so popular that not everyone who wants to can get in on a server.
With any luck, the developers at Arrowhead Game Studios are already trying to resolve these initial teething issues with matchmaking. The studio has yet to address or even acknowledge the issue on social platforms. But if you’ve purchased the game and are champing at the bit to play on day one, there are a few things you can do to try and fix the Helldivers 2 failed to join lobby error.

Unfortunately, in light of there being no official way to fix the Helldivers 2 failed to join lobby error, your best option right now is to reboot the game. Those playing on PS5 can do this by backing out of the game file on their console’s dashboard and then loading it up again, shutting off the console entirely before loading back in if this still doesn’t work. Those playing on PC should try similar by closing and then reopening the Steam client.
Failing that, there is the ability in the Helldivers 2 options menu to turn off crossplay. This will whittle down the number of servers the game can connect to – increasing your chances of joining a lobby. If this still didn’t work, Helldivers 2 can still be played in single-player as a solo experience, though this is far from the way Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony intends the game to be played.

Clearly, the big-blasting coop shooter has proven way more popular than the developer was expecting, which in turn is a good thing, even if it means some players are having trouble getting to play online with friends right away.
