What to do in the event of flooding

The whole of the south of England and southern Wales have been placed under a yellow weather warning for rain - and with the heavy rainfall comes the risk of flooding.

The Met Office has issued a guide of what to do if your home is within a flood alert area:

  • Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
  • Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.
  • People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
  • Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.

Woman's cold hands hack means you don't have to freeze at home

If you work from home or spend a lot of time at your computer, you'll know how horrible the cold weather can be on your hands - especially if you don't want to waste money having the heating on all day.

You can't stuff your hands in your pockets because you need them to type, and using a mouse with gloves on just feels wrong, so you end up feeling as though your fingers are going to fall off no matter how warm the rest of your body might be.

However, one woman on social media might just have come up with the perfect solution to keep cold hands at bay this winter. And what's more, it won't cost you a penny as the only thing you need is a woolly hat, which most of us already own.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Ms Eastwood said: “We recognise the childcare difficulties that do arise for parents but we were trying to minimise the disruption – an amber warning is significant because it does recommend essential journeys only.

“It’s not just the weather in your particular school that needs to be taken into account. The amber warning is expected to be lifted for tomorrow and it is expected that the schools will be open.”

RAC warns driving in snow can 'carry huge risks'

RAC breakdown spokesman Rod Dennis said: “The vast majority of drivers are heavily reliant on their cars, something that’s exacerbated when the weather turns icy or snowy, especially if public transport is impacted and drivers have no choice but to use their cars for trips they consider essential.

“Doing so can carry huge risks however, and it’s vitally important drivers follow guidance from the Met Office and others accordingly whenever there is a warning for severe weather issued – especially if it is an amber or even rare red warning. Waiting until conditions improve might well be the safest and best course of action.

“If a driver has made the decision that it is safe to set out in snow and ice, it’s important drivers always check their cars and adjust their driving styles to cope with whatever wintry conditions are thrown at them. A car’s braking distance can increase by up to 10 times when there’s snow and ice on a road, meaning it’s vital to check all tyres have plenty of tread and slow down considerably to reduce the chances of a collision.”

Millions of drivers would still get behind the wheel despite heavy snow - survey

New research shows nearly two out of five (39%) motorists would still get behind the wheel regardless of the amount of snow on the roads.

The survey, commissioned by the RAC, also showed that driving during extreme weather “can carry huge risks”. Some 29% of respondents in the poll of 2,300 drivers admitted scaring themselves after losing control of their vehicle in snow.

And just over half of those surveyed - 51% - said their local authority is “very good” or “good” at spreading salt on roads ahead of icy nights, while 36% rated it “fair” and 12% labelled it “poor”.

The RAC is advising motorists to check their vehicles and adjust their driving style during the current cold snap, and not take any risks that put themselves and their passengers in danger.

AA issues urgent travel warning to motorists

AA spokesperson Chris Wood said: “If you need to travel, reduce your speed to account for the conditions and leave plenty of space behind other vehicles, and try to use main roads where possible as these are more likely to have been gritted.

“Allow extra time as it’s likely your journey will take longer than usual, and ensure you have plenty of fuel or electrical charge if driving an electric vehicle. The cold snap is likely to affect vehicle breakdown levels, with faults such as flat batteries and wiper faults.”
