Katie Piper slams 'dangerous' Rishi Sunak after 'embarrassing' trans scandal
Katie Piper has furiously branded the Prime Minister as a 'dangerous leader' after Rishi Sunak's controversial transgender joke.
The Prime Minister made the remark in the House of Commons on Wednesday while the mum of murdered transgender teen Brianna Ghey was a guest in Parliament. Sunak was cheered from the Tory benches as he claimed Labour leader Keir Starmer "can't even define a woman". His comment sparked immediate outrage with angry MPs shouting "shame" as a silent Sunak refused to apologise.
Earlier this morning, Sunak again refused to apologise for the remark as he insisted his comments were "absolutely legitimate" because he was pointing out Starmer's 'U-turns'.
Discussing the controversy on the Loose Women panel, author and TV star Katie, 40, shared her thoughts on Mr Sunak's actions as she branded him as 'dangerous' and 'embarrassing'. Katie furiously argued: "I think that anybody - in particular our leaders - who use such dehumanising language about the most marginalised minorities in our society is so dangerous.
"It incites violence out on the streets - the streets that they don't have to walk home from work on or get the night bus home alone on. It normalises it and gives other people the green light to disconnect from other humans and treat them in this way. It's so, so, dangerous and there's this lack of trust for me now. If that's what he says in public, what does he say about other minorities behind closed doors."
Richard 'shuts up' GMB guest who says Hancock 'deserved' being called 'd***head'The Loose ladies were not the only ones to speak on the controversy, however. During Thursday's episode of This Morning, hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary invited Ashley James and Nick Ferrari to share their thoughts on the furore. Ferrari insisted Rishi had not made the comments with malice, while Ashley fumed the Prime Minister should not be defended and the language he used should be banned.
Former Made in Chelsea star Ashley said: "I know we are going to argue about this because you are currently trending on Twitter for what you said defending Rishi Sunak. Before she was murdered for being trans, Brianna Ghey's parents had to listen to politicians mock and degrade the trans community constantly. Questions like this, 'What is a woman'. We currently are on our knees, and Rishi Sunak goes on and on about what a woman is.
"I am sorry, the trans community are not to blame for violence against women and girls. I feel like Rishi Sunak has nothing left because his party have been in power for over a decade and they have nothing left. All they do is stroke culture wars. Divisive language has consequences, Brianna is one example of the consequences of this. What he is doing is he is telling other people in society it is ok to pick battles against the trans community. language really matters, Brianna really matters and the trans community matters."
LBC host Nick added: "You say I defended him, what he said was wrong. It was ill-advised and he shouldn't have said it. However, he is not a malicious man, he is making a political point. It was ill-judged, once he knew the mum was in the House he certainly shouldn't have said it. He did it for political reasons."
On Wednesday evening Brianna's father, Peter Spooner, demanded Mr Sunak apologise for the "degrading" and "dehumanising" remarks. He told Sky News: " Identities of people should not be used in that manner, and I personally feel shocked by his comments and feel he should apologise for his remarks."
Asked if he would apologise, Mr Sunak told reporters on Thursday: "If you look at what I said, I was very clear, talking about Keir Starmer's proven track record of U-turns on major policies because he doesn't have a plan.
"A point is only proven by today's reports that the Labour Party and Keir Starmer are apparently planning to reverse on their signature economic green spending policy. That just demonstrates the point I was making. He's someone who has just consistently changed his mind on a whole range of major things. I think that is an absolutely legitimate thing to point out and it demonstrates that he doesn't have a plan for the country."
