Gregg Wallace slams 'cruel and unfair' backlash and sets record straight on son

Gregg Wallace has hit out at the "cruel and unfair" response to his recent column after facing backlash for saying he "wouldn't have chosen" to have his son.

TV star Gregg, 59, wrote a widely-mocked piece about his Saturday regime which went viral this week. The 59-year-old MasterChef star raised eyebrows when an interview he gave detailing his daily routine gave an intimate insight into his cosy life with 37-year-old wife Anne-Marie Sterpini and their four-year-old Sid.

In the article, Gregg said wife Anna, who is 22 years younger than him, wanted a family. However he admitted at the time he wouldn't have chosen to have children at his age. That drew plenty of criticism and he has responded after saying some of the comments left him feeling hurt and upset.

Gregg got emotional during an Instagram live and said the comments have been "cruel, nasty and unfair". He said: "There are just two things I want to address here with Sid. People said 'so you spend an an hour and a half with your son, but then spend two hours on your computer''. No - I'm with my son in the house all the time.

"I just didn't write down 'had a tickle with Sid, playing around the living room' - you're not logging every minute of the day. I just logged the blocks. So, it didn't mean that's all I saw him that day. If you're living in a house with someone, you're interacting with them all the time. Not only that - that is a snapshot of one Saturday.

"I hope that makes sense to everybody. And the other thing as well - and I'm almost going to cry over this - people saying that Sid was unwanted. It took us two years to conceive with Sid. Two years." He went on to say the column was "innocent" and said that he was "deeply saddened" by the reaction.

Gregg has a 29-year-old son named Tim and a 27-year-old daughter named Libby from his second marriage to pastry chef Denise who he wed in 1999 and divorced in 2004. Anne-Marie, who Gregg affectionately calls Anna, has been married to the TV star since 2016 and live with their young son.

While Gregg is mainly famous for his role as a judge on MasterChef, he has become known in recent years for his impressive health transformation. After changing his diet and increasing his exercise, he shed 5st and got himself down to 12st - going on to admit he embarked on his fitness journey in order to be healthy for his youngest son.

Gregg was married to his first wife, Christine, in 1991, but she demanded a divorce within weeks and they split the same year. His third marriage to Heidi lasted from 2011 until 2012. In a weekend interview, Gregg explained that he agreed to have a child with Anna as long as she promised to spend one week per year on holiday with him and without their son.

He also arranged for her mother to live with them to help with childcare. Fans were also gobsmacked that he bragged about making a gym open half an hour earlier just for him so he could swim and sauna without members of the public around him. He also explained that he prefers breakfast at a Harvesters because they never disappoint him, whereas he has had bad meals at Michelin starred restaurants. He also hinted he demands that his wife have meals ready for him on the table at various points of the day.
