Stormzy’s mum's epic plan to get him back with Maya Jama after bitter split

An unlikely cupid rekindled the romance between Maya Jama and Stormzy after they split four years ago.

That cupid being Stormzy's beloved mum, Abigail Owuo, who just couldn't bare seeing her son separated from what she knew from the start was "the woman meant for him". Love Island host Maya, 29, went her separate ways from Stormzy back in 2019 when endless rumours were swirling that the rapper had been unfaithful to the Bristol-born beauty.

Despite the allegations, Stormzy - who is nominated for Best Male Act, Album of The Year, Song of The Year and Video of The Year at the 2024 MOBO Awards - vehemently denied ever cheating on Maya. Instead, the Vossi Bop hit-maker confessed that he simply had not treated Maya how she deserved to be treated.

After splitting, the pair both went on to date other people, with Maya even getting engaged to Australian NBA player, Ben Simmons. Their love story wasn't to last however, as after their split, Maya joked that she had rushed into engagement and realised it didn't feel right soon after.

Fast-forward to 2024 and Stormzy and Maya are finally back together after four years apart - all thanks to Stormzy's mum who has always been a huge fan of Maya. Abigail is said to have urged her son to get back with the presenter, whose star has been on the rise since she burst onto the scene at Radio One. Opening up about the couple, a source said last year: “Stormzy is really open about wanting to settle down and have kids one day and he knows Maya is ‘The One’.

“Stormzy is really close to his mum Abigail who has always been Maya’s biggest fan. Abigail wants the best for her son and motivated him to make amends with Maya," they added to The Sun.

Last year, Stormzy was said to have flown Maya on a no-expense spared £2,700 a night getaway at a lavish Greek villa for a show-stopping late birthday present for his ex. The impressive gift came amid rumours that the musician was trying to win the TV personality back after previously admitting it was the "worst mistake of his life" to split with her.

The Own It star, real name Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., previously told Louis Theroux: “You make a mistake and you lose someone you loved, someone you cared for, someone who is special to you. That’s probably the biggest loss a man can have, isn’t it? The whole f***ing palaver that surrounded that situation. I didn’t do what a man should do to fully appreciate love, and care for his woman.”

He told Louis he was keen to learn lessons about his behaviour and that he ”[doesn't] want to feel like that again”. Maya first met Stormzy in 2014 when they were both relatively unknown at the start of their careers. She later admitted she "fancied him from the start", but the pair were friends for three months before getting together.

In a joint interview with Vogue, Maya said: "You know, if I’m really honest, I knew I fancied him from the start. But I didn’t want anything yet, because you know, you’re trying to do the whole friend situation at first. And then I’d do, like, obvious hints that I fancied him and then take it back because I didn’t know if he definitely liked me. It was a childish phase. Then one day we just kissed and that was that!"

Now that they're finally back together, it was reported that the couple are going to couples' therapy to make sure their relationship goes right this time. A source told the Mirror: "Stormzy and Maya have been encouraged to go to couples’ therapy to nip their past issues in the bud once and for all. He is very close to his mum Abigail’s pastor, and she made the recommendation.

"They plan to use him in a similar role to Bishop T.D. Jakes in Oprah Winfrey’s life, who has guided her through the highs and lows of life with transformational thinking. Stormzy and Maya have never stopped loving each other and want to do all they can to protect their second shot at lifelong happiness. Stormzy has already told friends he’s ready to have kids as early as next year."
