Premier League clubs have been urged to find the “right deal” with the EFL for the good of the whole nation.

The 20 top flight teams will have a two-day shareholders meeting this week to try and thrash out a financial compromise with their Football League counterparts.

They are under pressure to find a deal to offer more support to the football pyramid rather than let an Independent Regulator impose something under the Football Governance Bill.

Prem clubs will also discuss increasing spending limits in the Profit and Sustainability Rules which arguably go hand-in-hand with any new deal for the EFL. They were close to agreement on a long term £900m deal with the EFL before Christmas but talks stalled and no vote is expected this week.

The EFL have decided not to scrap the two-legged Carabao Cup semi final to ease any pressure on the fixture list and the Football Association are likely to take the same view on FA Cup replays.

But pressure group Fair Game is pushing for an agreement and stressing that it will affect entire communities rather than just football. Fair Game Director of advocacy Mike Baker said: "The question is not whether we have a deal, but that we have the right deal. Football is central to communities across the country. It has the power to change.

"Since the start of the Premier League, there have been 64 incidents of clubs in the top four divisions going into administration. According to Companies House accounts, 39 of the 89 clubs that filed accounts last year are technically insolvent (44%).

"The deal has to support the whole pyramid and reward well-run clubs. Anything less is a wasted opportunity and will once more stress the need for a new independent regulator."

EFL chair Rick Parry slammed the Premier League's approach to talks while addressing clubs and MPs at the All Party Parliamentary Group for Football at the House of Lords last month. He said: "We haven’t had an offer from the Premier League. Let’s be clear.

"Let’s also make it clear that’s a matter of choice. The Premier League have decided not to make an offer. They could have done at any time over the last 30 years - and they haven’t."
