Prince William has returned to work after clearing his diary to care for wife Princess Kate following her abdominal surgery. It's also the first time he's been seen since King Charles was diagnosed with cancer.

The heir to the throne was at Windsor Castle carrying out an investiture ceremony, which is one of his regular duties as the Prince of Wales. Former England footballer Ellen White was among those receiving honours at the event today, as well as David Shreeve – who co-founded an environmental action group with TV botanist David Bellamy – and Francis Dickinson, who solved an 80-year-old maritime mystery by locating the wreck of a submarine which was lost at sea during the Second World War.

William temporarily stepped back from his duties three weeks ago to juggle caring for his wife and their children following Kate’s operation. After spending time at the London Clinic, Kate is now back home where her recovery is expected to continue until at least Easter.

The prince last carried out a major royal event more than three weeks ago, when he travelled to Leeds to make former Leeds Rhinos team-mates Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield each a CBE for raising funds and awareness for motor neurone disease.

Following the investiture, William will head into the capital for a gala fundraising dinner for London’s Air Ambulance Charity. He's expected to address his father's cancer diagnosis during the event. While the King plans to continue all his constitutional duties during his treatment, it's believe his oldest son may step up to carry out some public duties on his behalf.

The confirmation of William’s return to official engagements will be seen as an attempt to signal stability within the monarchy despite the difficult times facing the royals. In recent weeks, Queen Camilla has taken the lead with engagements while Charles, William and Kate out of action.

The King was seen for the first time since his diagnosis yesterday, when he was driven from Clarence House to Buckingham Palace in the State Bentley. He was then taken to Sandringham by helicopter where he will stay for the foreseeable future.

Prince Harry is currently in the UK visiting the King, making the 10-hour journey from California to London on Tuesday. However, insiders told The Mirror William has "no plans" to see his younger brother during his trip.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, has cleared his diary to fly to London to be with his father despite their troubled relationship, raising concerns about the seriousness of the King's health. He was pictured arriving at Clarence House to visit his father this afternoon.

Sources close to the Duke, who now lives in Montecito, California, have suggested he would have welcomed an opportunity to meet with William “if the opportunity were to arise”. A source said: “The Duke's primary reason to travel to the UK is to visit his father. If the opportunity were to arise to see the Prince of Wales then the Duke would have gladly accepted it.”
