Phil Foden believes that Premier League title race will go down to the wire this year.

Foden scored a hat-trick as Manchester City beat Brentford on Monday to close the gap on leaders Liverpool. City also have a game in hand on the Reds and can leapfrog them if they win that match. City are gunning for their fourth successive title, which would be the first time any team have achieved that feat in the Premier League's history. But while is side are now many pundits' favourites, Foden is not getting carried away.

Instead, he has insisted that Arsenal and Liverpool will both push the title race all the way. But he is confident his team can come out on top and become history-makers.

“It’s going to be tight one. Liverpool and Arsenal are two top teams doing really well. They are going to push us until the end so we have to try and not drop points and try to win all of our games really," Foden said.

When asked why he was so confident, he said: “Resilience. We keep proving it season after season. We keep surprising everyone by keeping our standards high and it’s down to the manager and this fantastic group of players. It’s the togetherness, when things aren’t going right, to bounce back.”

"We knew the threat they had and they’re a fantastic team," he added. "We had to keep going and react and I think we did that really well. We controlled the full game. I’m delighted with the outcome of the game.

"We stayed calm. We’re a team who trust our ability. There are ups and downs in football. We played really well even when 1-0 down. We had to remain patient. They closed the spaces but we stayed patient and controlled the game.

"I’m delighted with the performance because it is so difficult here. I thought throughout we deserved the win, we had a lot of chances and dominated the ball. So I’m delighted with the outcome."

City boss Pep Guardiola also hailed Foden as one of the key players in his team. He believes the midfielder has stepped up to a leadership role within the side as they push for yet another title.

“We knew it from the other day. I said a few weeks ago that Phil is having is most influential season in the team in terms of goals and assists. This season he’s been so important to us. He reads the game really well. How he plays simple and be more aggressive," he said.

“Always he has the pleasure to score goals and the threat in the six-yard box, always he’s there. He’s a clever runner and how he runs for the team. He’s an exceptional player. At his age playing 250 appearances for City - that means he’s had an influence since he arrived.”
