Prince Harry and Prince William could call on their secret three-word code for “times of extreme crisis” after news emerged of their father’s cancer diagnosis.

Buckingham Palace released a statement on Monday announcing the news King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer, following a procedure earlier this month on an enlarged prostate. However, they were quick to state that he had not been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and was already undergoing “regular treatments”. The statement read: “It was during this intervention that a separate issue of concern was noted and subsequently diagnosed as a form of cancer.”

It was revealed Charles had called his son Harry, who lives in California with wife Meghan Markle and their two children - Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2 - to inform him of the cancer diagnosis, and the Duke of Sussex is now rushing from the US to be with his father. It was later confirmed the 39-year-old would be arriving at Buckingham Palace “in the coming days”. The Duchess of Sussex will remain at their Montecito mansion with their children, the spokesperson added.

While he is currently estranged from his big brother Prince William after a bitter fallout due to his relationship with former actress Meghan, Harry may need to call on the secret code the siblings use in “times of crisis”. He detailed the special three-word phrase in his explosive memoir Spare, and revealed it was connected to their late mother, Princess Diana.

Recalling an incident at their grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021, Harry said William had shocked him and their father as they walked around the gardens of Frogmore Cottage, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex previously lived. “'Harold, you must listen to me! I just want you to be happy, Harold. I swear… I swear on Mummy’s life',” Harry wrote.

“He'd used the secret code. The universal password. Ever since we were boys those three words were to be used only in times of extreme crisis. For nearly twenty-five years we’d reserved that soul-crushing vow for times when one of us needed to be heard, to be believed, quickly,” he explained. “For times when nothing else would do.”

Harry says William's phrase “stopped me cold” because it simply “didn't work" due to their fractured relationship. “I simply didn’t believe him, didn’t fully trust him. And vice versa. He saw it too. He saw that we were in a place of such hurt and doubt that even those sacred words couldn't set us free,” he sadly recalled.
