Residents were left in shock after RAF Typhoon jets were heard blasting over the region earlier today.

A Scandinavian Airlines plane heading to Manchester Airport was intercepted by two RAF Typhoon fighter jets after a "brief and temporary loss of communications." According to flight trackers, the plane from Oslo to Manchester was escorted over the northeast of England before it safely arrived in Manchester.

A spokesperson for Manchester Airport confirmed the plane "lost communications" on the way to Manchester. The Typhoons were deployed to escort it to a safe landing as is "standard procedure" before it was met by emergency services on the runway.

The Ministry of Defence said Typhoons from RAF Coningsby intercepted the jet and that communications were later restored. However, the 'very loud' noise of the jets rumbling over homes in Manchester caught the attention of many, with one person saying it 'gave them a fright' and another adding they thought their 'roof was coming off' in comments on social media, Manchester Evening News reported.

Nicola Ryan said: "Came right over my house thought the roof was coming off". Paul Davis commented: "Gave me a fright as they thundered over my house!"

Rebekah Danielle said: "Wondered what they were doing, they flew right over my house. Was very loud". Michele Watson wrote: "I was in Stockport this morning and it flew straight over the Merseyway centre, it was amazing but my god it was so loud."

A spokesperson for Scandinavian Airlines System added: "Flight SK4609 from Oslo to Manchester this afternoon underwent an escorted landing in response to a brief and temporary loss of communication. A standard procedure was initiated but there was never any danger to the flight or its passengers.

"The flight landed safely in Manchester and the departing passengers are about to take off to Oslo. An investigation has been launched and the matter is being handled by relevant authorities as per standard procedures and we cannot comment any further."

An MoD spokesperson added: "Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon aircraft were launched this afternoon from RAF Coningsby to intercept a civilian aircraft that had lost communications; subsequently, communications were re-established, and the aircraft was intercepted and safely escorted to Manchester."
