Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has been the quickest player in the Premier League this season, reaching a top speed of 37.38 kilometres per hour in his team's weekend draw with Everton.

Van de Ven, who returned from a hamstring injury in January, is one of four new arrivals in the competition to claim one of the top spots. The only exception is Wolves star Pedro Neto, who sits third.

Sky Sports gave a run-down of the top five and the players sitting just below, as part of a Monday Night Football segment higlighting Luton winger Chiedozie Ogbene. Ireland international Ogbene sits second, with a top speed of 36.93 km/h.

West Ham striker Michail Antonio was part of the panel to analyse the weekend's action, and the 33-year-old asked about his own position on the list. His top speed of 35 km/h was only good enough for 41st in the league, though injury has restricted him to just 12 league outings this term.

Behind Van de Ven, Ogbene and Neto are Liverpool new boy Dominik Szoboszlai and Burnley defender Dara O'Shea. Szoboszlai has recorded a top speed of 36.76 km/h, with O'Shea just behind at 36.73.

Just outside the top five are two men with Everton connections. Former Toffees winger Anthony Gordon has hit 36.68 km/h in Newcastle colours, with current Goodison Park favourite Amadou Onana posting 36.65.

Van de Ven's ability to show off his pace against Sean Dyche's side won't be much consolation given the final score. Spurs led the game going into second-half stoppage time, only for Jarrad Branthwaite to nod home a late equaliser.

"He’s a Rolls-Royce," former Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp said of Van de Ven after the defender returned against Manchester United in January. "He’s got tremendous pace, makes the game look easy, defends well.

"‘There was a couple of times when he ran into space to cover. Especially the way that Spurs play with the full-backs coming in, inverting, you need to be athletic and be able to run into areas.

"He’s got that speed that not many possess. He can also play as well and alongside [Cristian] Romero they’re forming a formidable partnership."

Spurs sat top of the Premier League table before Van de Ven picked up his injury in a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea, but have since dropped to fifth. Next up for Ange Postecoglou's team is a home game against a Brighton side who handed them a 4-2 defeat just after Christmas.
