Phil Foden 's stunning hat-trick for Manchester City against Brentford helped set a new Premier League goal record, it has emerged.

The England international, 23, plundered a superb treble for the champions to help them battle back against Brentford, who had taken a first-half lead through Neal Maupay. And the four goals at the Gtech Community Stadium carry extra significance when tallied up with the other goals scored across the weekend in the Premier League.

The tally of 45 goals scored is the highest ever amount amassed during a 10-game Premier League matchweek - a statistic which was promptly confirmed by the league after Foden's final strike.

A host of high-scoring matches were played out over the weekend, including Luton 's enthralling 4-4 draw with Newcastle and Wolves ' impressive 4-2 triumph over Chelsea.

Those fixtures meant that just three goals were needed in the final match of the round between City and Brentford - a feat that the two sides managed with time to spare.

The previous goal record across a single round of fixtures consisting of 10 games stood at 44 goals, which was set last season on matchweek 34. That record stood for less than a year as a result of the flurry of goals seen across the league over the past few days.

Brentford were unable to muster up a response following Foden's second-half strikes, meaning Manchester City went on to win the match 3-1.

That result that cuts the gap at the Premier League summit to just two points, with the champions also having a game in hand on the current league leaders, Liverpool, who lost 3-1 to third-placed Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

After winning the treble last season, City have more history in their sights as they bid to become the first team in top-flight history to ever win four league titles in a row.
