Richard Madeley accused of interrupting Kate Garrway during emotional Derek chat
Good Morning Britain fans accused host Richard Madeley of "interrupting" an emotional Kate Garraway as she spoke about husband Derek Draper in a candid live interview.
Tearful Kate returned to TV today as she appeared on the ITV breakfast show to speak about losing her husband Derek as she prepares to return to work fully later this week. Former political lobbyist Derek had been suffering from long term complications after he contracted coronavirus back in 2020. He had slowly been recovering but tragically suffered a heart attack at the end of last year, and passed away last month.
Kate is determined to be open about her grief and what her long time partner endured and she chatted to Susanna Reid, 53, and Richard, 67, from her London home. She spoke about her brave 17-year-old daughter Darcey, who helped carry her dad's coffin as a pall bearer and her eulogy before Richard chimed in.
"Those who will be facing the worst today I am thinking of them really, because I know how they feel..." Kate said. Veteran host Richard could be heard interjecting: "Kate I wanted ..." before she said: "....sorry, I interrupted you." Richard, waving his hands to try and signal an apology, responded: "No, I interrupted you, on a live link."
Some were quick to have a go at the broadcaster and took to twitter to pull him up. One wrote: "Richard Madeley interrupting and talking over a lady describing burying her husband. Unbearable little man." Another said: "Once again Richard keeps interrupting. Let Kate talk."
Richard 'shuts up' GMB guest who says Hancock 'deserved' being called 'd***head'It's not the first time he's jumped in when Kate has been speaking. Richard was forced to apologise on Good Morning Britain last August after Kate sharply shut him down when he appeared to interrupt her. They were discussing Ryanair's boarding pass charges and how some customers are left unaware of the added expense if not printed before they fly.
Trying to make sense of the situation, Kate attempted to read a statement from the airline to viewers at home. But while reading, Richard tried to interject which led Kate to shut him down. Richard said: "Who checks terms and conditions on a flight," before saying, "I can only think..."
But Kate swiflty stopped him in his tracks and said: "Can I just finish the sentence?" Richard quickly apologised by saying "sorry", but the frosty interaction didn't go unnoticed by fans at home. One said: "Someone give Madeley the hook. Constantly interrupting everyone. I think Kate Garraway will let rip soon."
Today, Kate revealed that at the end, Derek couldn't open his eyes or speak. Alone in the room when her husband passed away, she detailed the moment she had to break the news to their children he was gone - with son Billy taking her back with his response. He told her: "I'm so sorry mum," with her telling her co-hosts that her reaction was: "Oh my God, they really have taken onboard a caring role."
After Richard asked Kate how she managed to keep it all together all the way through Derek's sickness, the mum-of-two explained: "I'm not sure I did it very well. I think I relied on everyone else. I think I have a massive debt to a lot of people - especially Derek.
