Top golfer Lee Westwood has lost one of his best young horses in a “gutting” incident at Musselburgh on Sunday.

Racing fan Westwood is involved in ten horses with friend Dave Armstrong and looked set to celebrate another victory with £25,000 buy Getagin.

The six-year-old won at Musselburgh in December and looked set to double his score when taking a length lead into the closing stages of a bumper at the Edinburgh track on Sunday.

But he broke down and fell just after being headed by rival Wicked Thoughts in the final strides of the race.

A stewards inquiry ruled that the Sandy Thomson-trained Getagin had crossed the line with jockey Ryan Mania before the rider came off and was officially placed second.

The horse was attended by vets but his injury was so severe he could not be saved. His was the second fatality on the card after Absolute Notions went wrong in the Pertemps Network Group Handicap Hurdle.

In a post on X, Armstrong said: “It’s been a tough day ,to loose any horse is gutting , but to lose Gin like we did @MusselburghRace today was devastating,a lovely young horse with the world at his feet going to win 2 out of 2 ,gutted for everyone .Thanks for all your kind messages .”

Thomson said: “Awful awful day. We are all devastated. So hard to deal with. He was a gentleman and such a talented horse."
