A message in a bottle that was written more than 30 years ago by a pair of school children has been found in New York's Shinnecock Bay.

According to a social media post, the note inside was written back in October 1992, and washed up last week. It included an envelope with a return address for Mattituck High School with a note from the young pupils asking whoever opened the bottle to send the letter back to them.

It read: "Dear Finder, As part of an Earth Science project for 9th grade, this bottle was thrown into the Atlantic Ocean near Long Island. Please fill in the information below and return the bottle to us … Thank you, Shawn and Ben." Adam Travis posted photos of the bottle and message on the Mattituck High School Alumni Facebook page and said he had found it on the bay.

Remembering Mr. Richard Brooks, the teacher who started the project with his 1992 class, his son John Brooks commented on the post and revealed the sad news that his father passed away last year from Alzheimer’s, adding that his dad "was born to be a teacher."

He said on the group: "Oh my goodness…I’m in tears and so emotional. Dad truly loved doing this activity with his students, and this is such a welcome reminder and appropriate remembrance!! Thank you so much for posting!!" he told the New York Post: "He was the teacher that would sing a stupid song or do a little dance, whatever got them involved. That’s why he did the message in a bottle project."

She said: “I found this little bottle washed up and I said, ‘I’ve just got to put a message in. I won’t get my hopes up somebody would get it.’ And I threw it straight into the middle of the ocean.” The couple who were cleaning up rubbish with their granddaughter were visiting 14th Street Beach in Wildwood, when Frank spotted the bottle. Frank said: “We found the bottle in some seaweed right at the water's edge. We had to take it home to get the note out, it was jammed in the bottle so tightly.”

The note, which was partially damaged and did not include any contact details, read: “Greetings from Ireland. I have thrown this bottle into the sea for someone to find another day. “Maybe it's travelled down to Africa or to Iceland. I won't know if someone found this, but I hope it is found.”
