A woman was scammed out of hundreds of pounds by a man she thought was her boyfriend - who falsely claimed he had Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Beth Thomas considered the man, who she hasn't named, her partner after he told her he had been abandoned by his parents as a baby, was raised by nuns, had been homeless and bankrupt, and suffered from chronic spinal condition Multiple Sclerosis. Ms Thomas, 30, decided to help her new beau with gifts of food and paying for outings, helping him to get back on his feet after his business ventures allegedly went south. However, it soon emerged almost everything Beth knew about the man was a lie - and he was a father to a four-month-old baby.

The man's mother was among three people who told Beth everything he had said was false, including the MS diagnosis. It meant the man even faked a seizure in front of Beth for her sympathy. All the deceit was enough for Beth to cut all communication with the man, who she met after she moved from south Wales to Yorkshire.

Beth said: "He was very much still with the ex, who also had his four-month-old baby. His mum revealed that he had used similar lies with other women to scam them out of money and urged me to cancel all of my bank cards and change my passwords in case he was doing the same to me. This was a scam he had used on me and as I later came to learn, on multiple other women in the past."

The swindler allegedly denied his deceit and claimed his ex-girlfriend was "a psycho" and was lying to get him back. However, she told Beth everything he had told her was untrue. "It all left me quite traumatised, the amount of lies one person could tell and keep up with was terrifying. I've definitely learnt to trust again, but that trust has sadly continued to be broken by past partners," Beth said.

Since the experience, Beth has used social media to help other women who have suspicions about their partners. She also revealed how she received significant support from friends and family after the swindler was exposed in 2015.

Beth added: "When I tell people, they can't quite believe it's all true. The levels of lies told are what shocks people the most because it is so ridiculous you would think it can't be made up... My friends and family were great during this time, as was the employer we both worked with at the time. My boss was just brilliant."
