A mother who saved her two young children from a house fire lost her life when she returned to save her baby.

The woman died after a devastating house fire in Houston, Texas, on Saturday morning after she tried to rescue her baby from the home, officials have confirmed. A huge emergency service response was called to the home in north Houston. The Houston Fire Department arrived at the property in Heaney Street, near Tidwell and Bauman Road, but were unable to save the lady.

She had returned into the blaze, after dragging out her other two youngsters, to try and save a one-year-old baby from the burning home, but she never made it out. Both surviving children are under the age of 10, the fire department revealed. Both children are now in the care of relatives.

The deceased woman's sister told of how her family member perished in the fire after becoming overcome by smoke and flames.

She said: "The neighbors said the fire started around 4:30 am probably. My sister took my niece and my nephew out and went back for the one-year-old. But they said she didn't make it. The baby was in her arms."

Due to the devastation of the fire, it wasn't clear whether the property was a one or two story home as it had been so badly destroyed, ABC13 reports. One neighbour who saw the fire said she could hear children yelling for help in Spanish through the mail slot on her door just before 5am.

However, by the she went to leave the house and got to her door she could see the children without shoes in the rain and running for the neighbours house while their home was up in flames.

The fire department said officials always advise people to stay out of a home once they escape a fire, but it's understandable the impossible situation this mother was put in. Firefighters said at this time they are continuing their investigation to try to determine what caused the fire.

Last week, multiple boats caught on fire as a blaze ripped through the Anchorage Marina in Baltimore. First responders from Baltimore City Fire Department are currently tackling the blaze "by land and sea", according to fireboat operator Andrew Doyle on X.

Two boats are believed to be affected by the fire and one is reported to have submerged - but there have been "no reports of any injuries on civilians or firefighters", Baltimore City Fire Department spokesperson Kevin Cartwright told the Mirror.
