Maypole unveiled as Pussycat Dolls star on Masked Singer in double elimination
A second person has been unmasked on The Masked Singer - with fans left speechless.
Tonight, the seven remaining contestants - Air Fryer, Eiffel Tower, Dippy Egg, Maypole, Piranha, Big Foot and Cricket - took to the stage in the hope of securing their place in the next round. One has already been evicted but another is also set to head home and tonight, it was revealed that Maypole is in fact to a stunned panel of judges.
Pussycat dolls star Melody Thornton was revealed to be Maypole, with many have mistakenly thought it was Rita Ora herself behind the mask as she had been absent from filming of multiple shows due to her commitments abroad.
Speaking about the mistaken identity, she joked: "I loved that they thought it was Rita at first because she wasn't on the panel! I said it out there, and I'll say it again. Two of my band mates were mentioned, which actually I was like, 'Yes. Good. Yeah, go that way.' Even though it's too close. When you've been in a group, you'll always be a part of that...
"I think that the thing about this show is that it's all positive. You actually just get to have fun, and it's been lovely bringing this character to life! ... What I've enjoyed most is that Maypole is so positive."
Three new celebrities are set to join The Masked Singer panel this weekendShe added: "She's cheering for everybody else. I wrote a whole biography for my character. She’s not far off a female Pinocchio. So, there's this part of her that wants to be loved and she's draped in all of these colours. I just wanted to see her go far."
Earlier in the show, Dippy Egg was unmasked as Nicky Campbell, who admitted he was quite emotional about doing the show.
Last week, daytime TV star Lorraine Kelly was revealed to be behind the Owl mask. Speaking after the unmasking, she said: "Hi there, yes, it was me, I was Owl on The Masked Singer, congratulations if you guessed it. One of the clues, of course, was about Dundee United. I'm right here at Tannadice Park, a lot of you got the clue about the tangerines. So well done if you did!"
Speaking about her time on the show, Julia Sawalha - who was unmasked two weeks ago as Bubble Tea - said: "When I was first being walked through the tunnel, I had this moment where the production team were being so kind and I had a fight or flight moment. I felt like a four year old, I wanted to run. I’ve never been so terrified in my entire career.
"So, I nearly burst into tears and thought, ‘No, it’s ridiculous, isn’t it?’. I just had to pull myself together." Discussing how her Absolutely Fabulous co-star Jennifer Saunders was there for the big reveal, she added: "It’s weird how the stars align. I could just about make her out. I thought, ‘There’s someone I know.’ It’s lovely. She didn’t know, but I knew, it didn’t intimidate me at all. Completely the opposite. The whole process is liberating. I do love this show. It’s so addictive, and look at me."
