Paris Fury has revealed her private reaction after Tyson Fury was forced to pull out of his much-anticipated fight against Oleksandr Usyk.

Fury was scheduled to fight Usyk in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, February 17 for the undisputed heavyweight world title. But the fight was postponed on Friday after Fury sustained a deep cut above his right eye while sparring.

Some have questioned Fury’s decision, just two weeks before the bout and have pointed to his struggles in beating former UFC world champion Francis Ngannou in October. But his wife Paris has explained just how serious the injury is.

Posting on Instagram after the announcement, she wrote: "My full body was shaking with nerves when he showed me this cut because I wasn’t there with him. He sounded so p***ed off and disappointed, but this is boxing (a dangerous sport) and these things can happen."

Announcing the decision, Fury said: “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition. I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and | will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed.

“I can only apologise to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

The injury was described as “a freak cut” which required “urgent medical attention and significant stitching”. Fury has insisted he will still fight Usyk this year, amid a backlash from boxing fans.

A spokesperson for promoter Frank Warren said: “Whilst this is still breaking news it is clearly a massive disappointment, after the work that has been done by so many people to finally deliver this historic event to the world.

“Once the Doctors have appraised Tyson’s eye, we will have a better idea of the period of recovery needed. Once known we will work diligently with all the stakeholders and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to reschedule this fight as soon as possible and will of course keep everyone updated with developments.”

Former world champion Johnny Nelson recently suggested Fury wasn’t up to beating Usyk. “If what I’m hearing is correct in the Tyson Fury camp, it ain’t good. I’ve always said Tyson beats Usyk, but the Tyson that turned up against Ngannou doesn’t beat Usyk,” Nelson told Mirror Fighting.

“The Tyson that I’m hearing about how his training camp is going doesn’t beat Usyk. This Tyson Fury is surprisingly quiet, it means he is either completely focused and in the zone or it’s a bad sign.”
