Shane MacGowan's wife Victoria Mary Clarke has praised actor Johnny Depp following the death of her beloved husband.

The Pogues singer died aged 65 in November last year following a series of illnesses that had left him in hospital. He was discharged and was able to celebrate his and Victoria's fifth wedding anniversary at home before tragically dying "peacefully" days later. Victoria, 57, said he was "surrounded by thousands of angels" when he passed away.

She has since thanked Hollywood star Johnny Depp, who was a close friend of Shane for over three decades. He had attended the legendary singer's funeral along with the likes of Bono, Nick Cave, Bob Geldof, Imelda May and actor Aidan Gillen. Johnny delivered the Prayers of the Faithful during the service and Victoria has praised the actor for his support.

Taking to Instagram, she said: "I just wanted to express my immense gratitude and appreciation to our great friend Johnny who has been such an incredible support to me since the death of Shane. True friendship is the most beautiful and precious gift you can have in life and it lifts your spirits to know that someone really has your back.

"And not just that, I think it’s a wonderful gift to feel seen and understood and cherished at a soul level by another human. It gives you a feeling that you are not alone in this world, you are connected and you are accepted and appreciated. The heart has a way of reaching out to people even without words. Maybe our hearts are telepathic and they are more eloquent than words can ever be. Whatever way it works it’s a mystery and it’s magical. Thank you for being a friend JD ! And Shane thanks you too."

Johnny has previously recalled the first time he met Shane while in a pub. Speaking at the San Sebastian Film Festival for his biopic for titled Shane, Johnny shared: “There was a drink in this hand, a pint, and in this hand there was a guitar. And he was teetering, balancing back and forth trying to negotiate which way to fall. I watched him do that for about 15 minutes.

“Then I was introduced to him, before he fell, and from that moment on you just knew… there are moments in life when you know this will happen one time and one time only, when you get the opportunity to spend time with greatness. I can only say I fell in love with him the second I met him and I’m still in love with him to this day. His wife Victoria is a wonderful partner for Shane, they’re best friends, and I’ve seen that continue over these many years under all kinds of duress."

The pair shared a love of music, with Shane performing hit song ‘That Woman’s Got Me Drinking’ on Top Of The Pops, along with Johnny on guitar in 1994. Johnny serenaded Shane and his wife Victoria Mary Clarke on the guitar at their wedding in 2018 in Copenhagen.
