The piano man has returned to the studio, releasing his first song in nearly two decades.

Billy Joel released Turn the Lights Back On on Wednesday, after 17 years of releasing music. The last time fans heard a new single from Billy was on Valentine's Day in 2007, when he presented All My Life, to his then wife, Katie Lee. Before All My Life, Billy had not released original pop music since the release of the River of Dreams album in 1993.

He then released Fantasies & Delusions in 2001, a classical album. In 2014, Billy started his long-running residence at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Billy has now announced that he will be going on a stadium tour.

He then released the lyrics video on February 1, which fans were nothing but happy to hear that Billy is back.

One person wrote: "I'm 60 years old. Billy Joel is nearly 75. With this song, time slips away and I'm 19 again, laying on the living room floor in front of the console stereo with my eyes closed and my parents here again in the other room, letting Billy's music fill the house. Thank you, BJ." Another wrote: "I second the person who said you came back because you know we need you now. I’ve listened to this song over and over again and can’t believe the level of emotion it brings out in me. It brought tears to my eyes. You are a very rare breed, Billy, and I fear there aren’t any more like you in the pipeline. This is one of your very best. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Optimism returned to me today because of this song."

The song goes: "I’m late but I’m here right now and I’m trying to find the magic that we lost somehow. Maybe I was blind, but I see you now. As we’re laying here in the darkness, Did I wait too long to turn the lights back on?" The song was written by Joel Wexler, Wayne Hector and Arthur Bacon, and produced by Freddy Wexler.

In 2019, Bill told Rolling Stone that he has a lot of music "that no one's ever heard and no one may ever hear" if he did not decide to release it. He said: "It’s really about the creative process that’s important to me, not about having records on the charts or selling a lot of recordings. I’m learning all the time, and you never stop learning. That’s what’s good about the writing process. You always learn something new whenever you create."
