A woman has taken a stand against her demanding mother-in-law who wanted her to stop breastfeeding her daughter to join them for dinner. The mum had decided to go to her bedroom to feed the baby to get privacy and avoid embarrassing her guests, who also included her father-in-law and brother-in-law. But her husband's mum was very demanding when it came to meal times and expected everyone to be at the table when the food was there.

However, the woman, who is German, told fellow posters on Reddit that because the child could be unpredictable when she was being fed and then put down for a nap, she was sometimes late to arrive for meals and this caused her mother-in-law to "barge in" to her room and demand that she be with the family for food. This would often cause the baby to take longer to finish feeding or would startle the little one and draw out the time it took for her to fall asleep.

The 28-year-old mother said that because her Italian mother-in-law kept doing this she ended up having to eat much later than everyone else and the food was always cold by the time her three-month-old daughter finally went to sleep. She said: "It left me fuming. More work to do with the baby and I'm secluded. This happened several times. I asked my husband to talk to her and explain I can't always come on time. He talked to her but she still did all this anyway. So I simply decided to stop being late to the dinners.

"The next time she barged in my room and announced food was ready, I came without hesitation. I came to the table exactly as I was. No shirt, half a bra, baby hanging on one t**. (nothing was seen as the baby's head covered up everything anyway, but still). Ensue uproar."

She said that her husband's mum hit the roof and said she was "indecent" and should be "ashamed" for being partially undressed as there were men present, but the woman shouted back at her saying: "What the hell does she keep calling me to the table for if I'm not yet ready. I have no reason to be in my room alone with my baby while everyone else is out having a great time together. Brother and father-in-law are trying not to get in on the argument."

She said that her 27-year-old partner took his mother's side and said that while he understands that she's frustrated, what she did wasn't going to help the situation. She added: "But... after that mother-in-law didn't bother again while I was busy with the baby. So what if I came to some meals a little after everyone had started eating. The roof didn't cave in! AITA?"

Other users of the site said they were shocked at her husband not supporting her and that her mother-in-law was out of order, with one saying: "Since when does a guest get to dictate to you in your own home. The woman was rude. Your husband should have brought you your dinner so you could eat while feeding the baby. Your husband was just as bad, why is it men become useless when their mothers are around."

And another also thought her husband was the one who had caused the problems, saying: "Yup, tell your husband you're disappointed in him. He should have handled his own family. If he knows how to usher women away and scold them, he should have done this to his mum every single time she interrupted you and woke the baby. I'd tell your husband if he doesn't learn to control his mum she can't stay."
