A bridesmaid has been left ‘blindsided’ by her bride-to-be friend after being told she is expected to fund her own food and flowers at the wedding. Taking to Reddit she said: “This is the first time I have been asked to be a bridesmaid. I knew going into it there would be some financial costs (ie dress, travel, nails, etc), but I didn’t expect things like food or flowers to not be provided.”

And after admitting that a ‘budget wedding’ was understandable given the current economic climate, she then revealed that all guests attending the proceedings had been told they needed to fund their own food, while bridesmaids also had to fund their own flowers. And after asking if anyone had experienced a similar situation, she was received to know that the friend's financial fiasco was far from normal.

One reader said: “This is not normal. I completely understand budget weddings, but either they pay for flowers or you don’t have them. That is not the responsibility of the bridal party at all. Don’t even get me started on everyone paying for food – like that’s one of the bare minimum things a couple provides. Food.”

Another reader agreed, commenting: “That is the bride’s expense: bouquet, floral spray or a single daisy!” while another offered some floral advice to keep things on a budget: “Why don't you and the other bridesmaids just carry a single rose?”

Many were fuming about the flowers on the bridesmaid’s behalf: “Do not buy flowers. This is absolutely absurd and downright cheap to ask it of you. She is gross,” said one, while another simply said: “Umm, they cannot afford a wedding.”

“Absolutely run!” said one. “This is just the beginning of the money requests. Next, it will be the wedding shower and gift, the lingerie shower and gift, the week-long bachelorette destination party paying for the bride's food and drinks, the rehearsal dinner, the wedding day gift, the after party, the next day brunch…”
