Russell Brand shares son's secret health battle as sex allegations blew up

Russell Brand, 48, has revealed his youngest child was born with health complications and underwent surgery last year.

The Despicable Me actor told former Fox News host Tucker Carlson how the sexual assault allegations made against him in September were particularly "hurtful" as his newborn baby was born with a heart condition and needed surgery as the claims became public knowledge.

The multiple allegations against Brand, 48, were first made during Channel 4's explosive Dispatches documentary, Russell Brand: In Plain Sight. The dad-of-three was accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse - with the incidents allegedly taking place between 2006 and 2013. Brand strongly denied the allegations ahead of the show airing on 19th September.

Brand's wife Laura Gallacher was pregnant with the couple's third child when the investigative documentary premiered and went on to give birth. Her husband was interviewed under caution by Scotland Yard detectives and both Channel 4 and BBC - Brand's former employers - began internal investigations related to the allegations made against the comedian.

Speaking to Tucker Carlson on YouTube this week, four months on from the Dispatches documentary airing, Brand was asked about how the allegations impacted him. He told the former Fox News host: "I'm aware that I put myself in an extremely vulnerable position by being very, very promiscuous, [but] that is not the type of conduct I endorse, and it's certainly not how I would live now. Of course, I deny any allegations of the kind that have been advanced - and what I have seen is the significance of family and the importance of beliefs that are transcendent of this."

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor went on to share: "My son was born with a heart condition and while this [the allegations being made] was happening he was undergoing heart surgery. He was 12 weeks old and I suppose what that did, Tucker, is it revealed that what we were experiencing was a public concoction." Brand then explained why he was bringing up the subject of his son's health, claiming that the reaction to the documentary made him aware of what is "important in life".

Brand was reportedly interviewed by cops for a second time in December, in relation to "a further six non-recent sexual offences". The Metropolitan Police last month confirmed that enquiries are ongoing and that the man has "now been questioned in relation to nine alleged offences".

A police spokesperson told The Mirror in December: "A man in his 40s attended a police station in south London on Thursday, 14 December for a second time. He was interviewed under caution by detectives in relation to a further six non-recent sexual offences. The same man previously attended a police station on Thursday, 16 November for questioning. The man in his 40s has now been questioned in relation to nine alleged offences. Enquiries continue."

The night before Russell Brand: In Plain Sight: Dispatches aired in September, Brand took to his YouTube channel to release a statement claiming there were "serious allegations" made against him, which he "absolutely refutes" and strongly denies. The comedian described the allegations as a "coordinated attack" against him.

Addressing his millions of followers ahead of the broadcast, Brand stated: "I've received two extremely disturbing letters or a letter and an email. One from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, as well as some pretty stupid stuff like community festival should be stopped, that I shouldn't be able to attack mainstream media narratives on this channel.

"But amidst this litany of astonishing rather baroque attacks, often very serious allegations that I absolutely refute. These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time when I was in the movies. And as I've written about extensively in my books, I was very, very promiscuous.

"Now, during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that. Then almost too transparent, and I'm being transparent about it now as well. And to see that transparency metastasized into something criminal that I absolutely deny makes me question, is there another agenda at play?"
