Russell Brand has addressed the allegations of sexual abuse that he is facing.

The comedian was last year accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse at the height of his fame. Channel 4's Dispatches and The Sunday Times published the allegations in September 2022. Four women are alleged to have come forward with claims, with the incidents taking place between 2006 and 2013. During this time Brand was a presenter on BBC Radio 2 and Channel 4 and starred in several Hollywood films.

In November, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that he had been questioned over the "non-recent" allegations. But while Russell has remained tight-lipped since his initial denial, he has now commented on the claims.

The 48-year-old said: "Of course, I deny any allegations, that have been advanced. I reject the allegations in the strongest possible terms." During a podcast interview with Carlson Tucker, the actor and comedian went on to say that the crimes he has been accused of committing are "appalling", claiming that the criticism he has subsequently faced is a "deliberate profound attempt to shut down any dissent in an astonishingly aggressive way."

He went on to say that the allegations were "very, very painful," saying: "I'm aware that I put myself in an extremely vulnerable position by being very, very promiscuous, [but] that is not the type of conduct I endorse, and it's certainly not how I would live now. Of course, I deny any allegations of the kind that have been advanced - and what I have seen is the significance of family and the importance of beliefs that are transcendent of this. Attacks like this, accused of what I consider to be the most appalling crimes, is very painful and hurtful. But there are consequences to the foolish way I lived in the past"

But in the midst of the allegations coming to light, Russell and his wife faced even more heartache over their little son. He explained the youngster was born with a heart condition and needed surgery on the organ. "He was 12 weeks old and I suppose what that did, Tucker, is it revealed that what we were experiencing was a public concoction," he commented.

Brand also faces allegations of controlling, abusive and predatory behaviour – all of which he denies. In a video shared on his social media in September, he said: "I am the news. I've received two extremely disturbing letters or a letter and an email. One from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, as well as some pretty stupid stuff like community festival should be stopped, that I shouldn't be able to attack mainstream media narratives on this channel. But amidst this litany of astonishing rather baroque attacks, often very serious allegations that I absolutely refute."

He added: "What I seriously refute are these very, very serious criminal allegations. Also, it's worth mentioning that there are witnesses whose evidence directly contradicts the narrative that these two mainstream media outlets are trying to construct, apparently, in what seems to me to be a coordinated attack.

"Now, I don't wanna get into this any further because of the serious nature of the allegations, but I feel like I'm being attacked and plainly they're working very closely together. We are obviously going to look into this matter 'cause it's very, very serious. In the meantime, I want you to stay close, stay awake, but more important than any of that, if you can, please stay free."
