The latest Willy Wonka film is available to watch at home just weeks after launching in cinemas. Out now to rent or buy, Wonka stars Timothée Chalamet as the titular chocolatier first introduced in Roald Dahl’s beloved 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Directed and co-written by Paddington filmmaker Paul King, the musical fantasy-comedy film serves as a prequel to Dahl’s novel and tells the story of how the young inventor, magician and chocolatier became the Willy Wonka we know today. It marks the third live-action film based on the novel, following 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

King – who penned the screenplay alongside Simon Farnaby – told The New York Times that his version is intended as a “companion piece” to Gene Wilder’s ‘71 classic. Alongside Chalamet, Wonka stars an ensemble cast of British actors and comedians, including Calah Lane, Matt Lucas, Paterson Joseph, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman and Rowan Atkinson, while Hugh Grant plays the Oompa-Loompa.

The Guardian gave Wonka five stars, describing it as “spectacular, imaginative, sweet-natured and funny,” while Empire said it “breezes by on a waft of ingenuity, charm and warmth.”
