Former Tottenham and France star Pascal Chimbonda has made his return to the pitch at the grand old age of 44.

The defender was previously the manager of ninth-tier side Skelmersdale United before he signed on to become a player. Chimbonda made his debut for the side on Tuesday evening in his side’s North West Counties League Premier Division clash with Charnock Richard.

He was introduced as a substitute. It is his first outing since a stint with Ashton Town four years ago. Chimbonda previously made 149 appearances in the Premier League, while he has was also given a place in the France squad for the 2006 World Cup - and even featured on the bench in their defeat in the final by Italy.

The outing did not quite go to plan for the veteran. Skelmersdale took the lead just after the half-hour mark through Yasir Salim before Charnock equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Jack Grimshaw restored Skelmersdale’s lead, only for Charnock to be awarded a controversial penalty late on, which they converted. Despite being pegged back, the draw was certainly an improvement in performances.

Chimbonda took to Twitter last week to apologise after his side were thumped 10-1 by Bury FC. He wrote: "As Skelmersdale United manager I want to apologise to all our fans who made the trip down to Bury FC today to see us, unfortunately it wasn’t the best performance from us, we can only promise to do better Tuesday night. Thank you again for all your loyal support #skembonda."

Chimbonda was appointed back in October last year. Speaking at the time, he said: “It is a great honour to become manager of a club with a history as rich as that of Skelmersdale United Football Club.

“This is a very proud day for me and also a wonderful opportunity, and I am very eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players. I will be focusing on greater fitness which will match the intensity I expect of all the players.

“I’ve been inspired by Guardiola, Mourinho, Simeone and Zidane, and as such just like those great managers, my philosophy will be to play attractive football. I know how precious this club is to the supporters, and therefore we’re ready to work hard to give them what they want.”

Despite his appointment, Skelmersdale actually sit bottom of the league with just six wins from 33 games. They also had three points deducted earlier this season.

Chimbonda’s side are next back in action on Saturday as they take on FC Isle of Man where they will be aiming to secure their first victory in four games.
