Workmen have been removing tiles from the roof of an unauthorised luxury spa belonging to Captain Tom’s daughter.

Scaffolding was erected around the £200,00 complex on Tuesday morning for demolition work to begin. Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband Colin have until next Wednesday’s deadline to remove the block which a planning inspector ruled was “at odds” with their grade 11 listed home in the Bedfordshire village of Marston Moretaine.

Neighbour Jilly Bozdogan, 70, said this morning: “The tiles are coming off fast and furious.” Another person said: “They are doing a ‘soft strip’, by trying to save everything they possibly can to sell on.”

Earlier a workman said: “The pool will be removed before the building is knocked down on Monday.” In August 2021 the couple had been granted permission to build a Captain Tom Foundation Building, to house the covid hero’s memorabilia.

Sir Tom, who was knighted by the late Queen, raised £38 million for NHS charities by completing 100 sponsored laps of the garden of the home during the pandemic in 2020. The World War veteran died in January 2021 aged 100.

The couple used the foundation’s name on their first set or plans. But it was not used on a retrospective application for the 49% larger building with its spa pool.

Last week people were seen taking away Captain Tom's prized possessions from the property, including the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, his Guinness Book of Records certificate, paintings and a model aircraft. Some of the items were loaded onto a trolley by workers at the site and taken away.

The family came under fire when they built the spa at the £1.2m home in Marston Moretaine, in 2021. Originally meant as a hub for the Captain Tom Foundation, which launched upon the veteran fundraiser's death earlier that year, Mrs Ingram-Moore later submitted retrospective planning permission after it was built with a pool, spa, and changing facilities.

The planning permission was rejected but the demolition was put on hold while the family appealed. During the appeal process, the family's lawyer set out the case for keeping the complex. It was heard the foundation was to fold following controversy surrounding money raised from the late-veteran's rise to fame.

Planning inspector Diane Fleming said the "scale and massing" of the building had "resulted in harm" to The Old Rectory - the Grade II listed family home in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire. They were given three months to remove the sauna and spa and it must be pulled down by February 7.
