Sky is planning to axe around 1,000 jobs in the UK this year as more customers are using its services online.

A large number of those facing job losses will be engineers, as fewer people want satellite dishes installed at their homes. Products like Sky Glass and Sky Stream, which can be set up without assistance and only need an internet connection, have gained popularity.

These cuts makeup about 4% of the media company's workforce. A spokesperson for Sky said: "The launch of Sky Glass and Sky Stream represents a shift in our business to deliver TV over IP (an internet connection) rather than satellite."

The spokesman added: "Increasingly, customers are choosing Sky Glass and Sky Stream, which don't require specialist installation, and that has led us to change the number of roles we need to deliver our services."

Before any final decisions are made, there will be a consultation period. Channel 4 also revealed plans to cut 200 jobs, roughly 18% of its workforce, on Monday as it shifts focus to digital services.
