A sprawling stretch of Scotland known for its trees is the most welcoming region on Earth, according to Booking.com.

Perthshire in the east of the country has the highest proportion of hotels and holiday lets on the site with 8/10 or more, as well as very high scoring taxi companies and car rental firms.

The result means that if you head to Perthshire on a holiday and use Booking.com to arrange part of your stay, you are more likely to have a positive experience than anywhere else in the world - at least when it comes to accommodation and vehicles.

If you'd like to put the welcoming qualities of Perthshire to the test, then Perth in the heart of the region is a good place to start. It sits just an hour's train ride away from Edinburgh and has plenty to do and see, including Scone Palace.

Inside the sprawling manor house visitors can admire the needlework skills of Mary Queen of Scots and see the State Rooms where Queen Victoria was entertained on her way to the Highlands. There's also a great adventure playground for children in the grounds.

The area is best known for the richness of nature you can find there. It has more than 200,000 acres of woodlands, which give it the nickname "Big Tree Country".

"You'll find everything from serene glens, rushing rivers and tumbling waterfalls. The region's endless expanses of lush forest, making it the perfect destination for family-friendly days out or adrenaline fuelled outdoor adventures," writes Visit Scotland.

Another key feature of the region is the River Tay, which is the longest river in Scotland at 119 miles long. It is also one of the five big Scottish salmon rivers, for those who are fishing enthusiasts.

The river can be enjoyed from the beautiful riverside walkway and North Inch Park, as well as a new long-distance walking and cycling route called The River Tay Way which takes you from Perth and Kenmore.

Perth and Kinross council leader Councillor Grant Laing said: “To be recognised as one of 2024’s most welcoming destinations on earth is a tremendous accolade and shows that hospitality in Perth and Kinross is second to none.

"We live in an area of outstanding natural beauty and welcome visitors from all over the world every year and have successfully hosted world-renowned events like the Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup and, just last year, welcomed thousands of participants for the Gran Fondo, part of the UCI World Championships.

"In March Perth Museum will open its doors to the public for the first time. The new home of the Stone of Destiny will bring thousands more visitors to the area and I am sure they will all discover plenty to love about Perth and Kinross when they get here.”
