February 10 marks the year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac. Whilst many Brits are aware of their star signs from Western Astrology, fewer know which animal they are based on the Lunar New Year - and what it reveals about them. So, how did it all start?
Ancient myth says the Jade Emperor set the zodiac order based on how 12 animals finished in a challenging race across a river. Surprisingly, the Dragon came in fifth despite being able to fly. When the Emperor asked how such a fast creature wasn't triumphant, the Dragon explained that it had been stopped by a village to 'bring rain to the people'. It also helped the Rabbit safely reach the shore, after it witnessed the animal clinging onto a log in the river.
Therefore, it's no surprise that those born in the year of the Dragon (1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024) possess many admirable traits. They're typically thought to be decisive, ambitious and sensitive - and romantic. When it comes to relationships, Dragons are highly compatible with those born in the year of the Snake, Rat, and Tiger - as these personalities often work well together. However, those born in the year of the Ox, Sheep, and Dog will likely clash with Dragons and don't make for a potentially disastrous pairing.
Chinese New Year, also referred to as the Lunar New Year, is observed by many countries in Asia, including China, Korea, Japan, and Malaysia. The 15-day festival will commence on February 10 - officially marking the end of the Year of the Rabbit.
A significant highlight of the celebration will be the dragon dance, thought to be a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Many believers will also deep clean their homes during this period to rid the household of bad luck. The annual celebration ends with the Lantern Festival, which sees many people hanging lanterns in temples or walking through parades with them.
