An elderly woman claims her hotel had no "flushing toilet or hot water" after flying to the UK from Spain for her son's birthday.

Beryl Mellor, 81, said she had a miserable weekend in a "dreadful" hotel with no working toilet. She had flown over from Alicante to visit her family in Southport and was staying in the Royal Clifton Hotel, owned by Britannia Hotels, on the Promenade in the town.

The nan-of-five stayed the two nights as planned, from January 26-28 but was far from happy with the experience and also complained of an electric heater which she said did not work properly.

"I had no flushing toilet for two days, no hot water for the two days and no central heating. There was an electric heater but I had to get up in the night [to sort it]. It was just dreadful," she said.

Beryl continued: "Reception staff did ring somebody and a man looked into it but they said they did not need to go into my room and did it from the basement. However, there was one small flush of the loo and it never worked again." She claimed she voiced her concerns with the manager of the hotel, who in turn said they would look into it.

But she claims the problems were never fixed and she was left with no flushing toilet, no hot water and no central heating for her whole stay, and added she was not offered the option to move rooms or a refund. "I got nothing, it was like hitting a brick wall," she told the Liverpool Echo.

Beryl said she suffers from a health condition and the lack of functioning toilet impacted her greatly while the general condition of the room put a "dampener" on her stay. She said: "They should not have been open, never mind having rooms occupied. It's a health and safety issue with there being no hot water. I have never had this problem with a hotel before. I have travelled quite widely around the world and have never had issues like this." The Mirror has contacted Britannia Hotels for comment.
