New information has emerged after a potential sighting of Amelia Earhart’s plane may mean the ending to the infamous aviation mystery.

On Saturday, an ocean exploration company based in South Carolina announced it had sonar images of what it thought could be the legendary Amelia Earhart’s missing aeroplane.

Deep Sea Vision’s founder, Tony Romeo, said the shape of the object in the sonar images closely resembled a Lockheed Electra, the craft Earhart went missing in.

Romeo said it was likely what they found was Earhart’s plane. He said: "All that combined, you'd be hard-pressed to convince me that this is not an aeroplane and not Amelia's plane.”

The company, Deep Sea Vision, believes it has compelling evidence to prove it has found the aircraft at the centre of Earhart’s tragic disappearance, at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

A high-tech underwater drone and a 16-member crew surveyed more than 5,200 square miles of ocean floor between September and December, ultimately finding a plane-shaped object between Australia and Hawaii, about 100 miles off Howland Island, where Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were supposedly set to refuel over 90 years ago.

Romeo added that his team plan to investigate the area where the images were taken sometime this year, Romeo added.

How did Amelia Earhart die?

In 1931, Earhart, became the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, but only six years later, the disappearance of the American pioneer would become one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in history. Earhart set off on a journey around the world at age 39, but ultimately went missing along with her navigator in 1937.

What happened to Amelia Earhart?

In 2018 experts analysed Earhart's final distress calls revealing clues that shed some light on what may have happened. Ric Gillespie believed he has proof that Earhart crash-landed on a remote South Pacific island about 2,000 miles from Hawaii - and called for help for nearly a week before her plane was swept out to sea.

Gillespie, who has researched the case for more than 30 years, says the distress calls were heard around the world - and prompted the Navy to launch a rescue mission.

He told CBS News: "It took the battleship a week to get there, by which time the radio signals had stopped, and when the planes flew over the island, they didn't see an aeroplane."

What did Amelia Earhart name her plane?

Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed 10-E Electra, purchased in 1936, with funds from the Purdue Research Foundation was officially called the "Flying Laboratory" because it was meant to be used as a test bed for new equipment. However, Earhart had other plans and wanted to fly the plane around the world.
