Huddersfield have sacked Darren Moore after winning three of his 23 matches in charge.

The Terriers hired Moore following the departure of Neil Warnock in September. At the time of Moore's appointment, Huddersfield sat 16th and had picked up eight points from their opening seven games.

After losing just one of his first five matches at the helm, it seemed as though Moore's tenure had started positively. However, Huddersfield then lost 4-0 at home to Cardiff and 4-1 at Leeds, starting a run of one win in 11 to leave them in a precarious position outside the bottom three.

A 3-0 win over Blackburn on Boxing Day earned Moore some more time to turn the Terriers' fortunes around, but Huddersfield have since gone six matches without a win. That run included being held at home against Plymouth, while Sunday's 1-1 draw at QPR proved to be the final straw for the Huddersfield board.

"We have to make this decision to give us the best chance of maintaining our Sky Bet Championship status come the end of the season," Huddersfield chairman Kevin Nagle said in a statement.

"Darren is a fantastic man, and he has worked tirelessly since taking the job back in September. I know I speak for everyone at the club in wishing him the very best for the future.

"We appointed Darren on the strength of his credentials as a manager, but it is now clear that this has not worked as we envisaged and hoped. There have absolutely been mitigating circumstances, such as the high number of injuries that Darren has had to cope with, but we have still not seen enough on the pitch in terms of results or the direction of travel in playing style and performances.

"I believe that our current squad is capable of more, particularly on the back of the work we have carried out in this transfer window, and we’re quickly moving to identify the right person to lead them through a crucial period of the season. We hope to make that managerial appointment soon."

Huddersfield were on course to claim maximum points in their relegation six-pointer at Loftus Road on Sunday after Jack Rudoni gave them an 86th-minute lead. However, QPR equalised deep into stoppage-time to deny Moore his fourth win in charge of the Terriers as Kenneth Paal struck.

The result leaves the Yorkshire outfit in 21st, three points above the relegation zone. Huddersfield face another critical game in their bid for survival this weekend, as Sheffield Wednesday travel to the John Smith's Stadium.

As for Moore, this is the second time in seven months he has lost a job, after departing Wednesday back in June following their promotion to the Championship. Moore took over at Hillsborough in March 2021, and although he couldn't keep them in the second tier, the club had faith he would guide them back.

After losing out to Sunderland in the play-off semi-final in his first full season, Moore helped Wednesday win promotion from League One in the 2022/23 campaign. The Owls beat Barnsley in the play-off final at Wembley to earn their place in the Championship.

However, a matter of weeks after winning promotion, Moore left the club by mutual consent. The 48-year-old has also managed West Brom and Doncaster during his five-year managerial career to date.
