Eddie Howe has denied Newcastle are in for £50million Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey - and says Callum Wilson is not being sold.

The Newcastle chief says the club have to sell to be able to afford new players before Thursday. Howe gave a transfer update today after being linked with Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey. Asked about that possible move Howe replied: “Incorrect.” And he also denied Matt Targett, recovering from injury, was off to Celtic.‌

Newcastle could yet sell Miggy Almiron but have not yet had a formal bid for any players, Howe said. If they get £25m for him it could open up the possibility of a new face coming in.

Howe said: “Still active? Nothing has changed. It is copy and paste from after and before the Fulham game. We are waiting to see what will happen."

Asked about Almiron and Callum Wilson who has also been linked with a £20m move, Howe said: “We are waiting to see what happens. I don’t want to talk about individual player names, that is not right.

‌“It is a complex situation. All eventualities could happen. We won’t bring someone in without losing one. All other options could happen.” Asked what the “best case” transfer scenario was, Howe said: “Keeping the squad intact as a manager, producing a team to win games, would be A1 for me.

“I have said many times we are guardians for the club’s future and we don’t want to breach FFP, we want to comply with the rules so I will support anything that helps.”‌ Howe said of Wilson: “Callum is 100 percent committed just like Kieran [Trippier].

“That is why I surprised by the noise about Callum. He is currently injured. From his perspective and our perspective, there is nothing in it.”‌ Howe says Newcastle have not given up on a top six or seven finish.

He said: “The gap is not big, and a run of form can change everything. We are not looking at our season being over or being negative. It is all to play for and we still have the FA Cup.”‌ Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson are still unfit for the trip to Villa.
