BT customers could be due £400 compensation as £1.3bn court fight begins

A huge court fight over a £1.3 billion claim against BT is starting.

More than three million people might get £300-400 each if the man who started the case, Justin Le Patourel, wins. Ofcom said in 2017 that BT charged too much for home phones since 2015. BT made their prices lower after that.

But Mr Le Patourel says BT should give money back to its customers, especially as many are older and need refunds. Mr Le Patourel stated: "We believe BT has been systematically overcharging millions of customers over many years, and those customers could be owed hundreds of pounds each."

He added: "Time really is of the essence. More than 40% of our claimants are aged over 70, and over 150 of them are dying every day. It really is vital that BT should refund every one of them as soon as possible." BT answered by saying they care a lot about their customers and want to keep everyone connected, helping those who need it most.

"This claim relates to a technical landline pricing issue which was resolved by Ofcom in 2017. We do not accept that our pricing was anti-competitive back then, and as such are committed to robustly defending our position at trial."
