Meghan Markle has been credited for the resurgence of Suits which became one of the most popular shows on Netflix in 2023.

Abigail Spencer, one of the show's cast, said she believes one of the main reasons why the series has become so popular, smashing viewing records, thanks to the Duchess of Sussex. Speaking on SiriusXM's "The Jess Cagle Show", Ms Spencer said "Meghan's loveliness" and the fact that "everyone is aware of her and her being on the show" means that many have been wanting to watch it.

Meghan starred in Suits as paralegal Rachel Zane for seven seasons, from the series premiere in 2011 until her departure in 2018. That was the time Meghan quit acting altogether to marry Prince Harry and move to Britain.

According to Ms Spencer, the Sussexes' show "Harry and Meghan", which came out in December 2022, also boosted the popularity of Suits. In the series, Harry claimed that Prince William left him terrified after screaming and shouting during the Sandringham summit and also accused his dad King Charles of lying.

Meghan recounted her tense first meeting with the Princess of Wales and revealed how she chose not to wear colour during royal engagements so she could blend in. The series came after they also aired a string of grievances against the royals in their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.

Ms Spencer said that the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes also made Suits more popular on Netflix. She said: "During the strike, there wasn’t anything else. You know, Netflix repositioned it, so I think there is something to positioning on Netflix, and when other things aren’t being made, it commands your attention, but it has to be great for people to watch it.

In September, Suits became the first TV show to attract a whopping 3 billion minutes viewed for seven weeks straight on Netflix.

The Duchess of Sussex became the Queen of our TV screens once more, with the show racking up 26.5 billion minutes watched in the two months since returning to our screens earlier this summer. But the record for the highest viewing total in eight weeks – 35.5 billion minutes - still belongs to season four of sci-fi favourite Stranger Things.

With nine seasons to its name, Suits has stayed around 3 billion minutes for longer than any programme since Nielsen streaming records began in 2020. Set at a fictional New York City corporate law firm, the high-flying TV series originally premiered on USA Network between 2011 and 2019, and also aired on Dave in the UK.

It comes as Meghan is reportedly being offered her "dream role" in television, with the Duchess of Sussex poised to return to legal drama Suits for a spin-off series. According to new reports, NBCUniversal has had the green light to go ahead with Suits: Los Angeles, with several episodes "already written". Aaron Korsh, who is Meghan's pal and the creator of the show which ran from 2011 to 2019, is said to have written the new episodes.

Not only is Meghan reportedly being offered her dream acting role for "one of the biggest TV deals" of 2024, but she is also understood to have been offered the chance to direct an episode of the spin-off series, which will see her make her debut as a Hollywood director. According to The Express, a senior production source has said that contract talks are ongoing between the network and powerhouse talent agency WME. The source added: "This is shaping up to be one of the biggest TV deals of the year."
