William and Kate hold hands at some events but not at others for official reason

Royal fans won't often see Prince William and his wife Kate holding hands in public, despite just how much of the time they spend in the spotlight. It's a rare occasion when the couple engages in public displays of affection, which is a far cry from other members of the Royal Family, like Meghan and Harry who have never held back their affections at public engagements.

According to an expert, there is one major reason why William and Kate so rarely choose to hold hands when they are out and about and it's to do with William's role as future King. The expert also claims that this likely means that royal fans will not be seeing that many more cute moments of PDA between the Waleses any time soon.

The expert - a body language analyst who previously used to work with the police, Darren Stanton - explained to The Sun that because the couple will one day be King and Queen, they are likely following in the footsteps of the late Queen Elizabeth and won't start being publicly affectionate at formal engagements they undertake during the course of the royal work.

"Kate and William play a very important role in the Royal Family now as the Prince and Princess of Wales," he said. "As they are next in line to the throne and are preparing to become King and Queen themselves one day, they use and follow the traditional royal protocols of the late Queen. The time when we may see them showing affection would be at a more lowkey event, which could be at a charity event or a film premiere."

The couple has been seen being more relaxed and affectionate with each other on occasion. At last year's BAFTA awards, Kate was spotted giving her husband's bum a barely noticeable, cheeky tap as they left the red carpet.

Equally, when they attended Princess Eugenie's wedding back in 2018, as the couple took a back seat and less centre-stage role as guests, Kate rested her hand on her husband's thigh and smiled as they watched the ceremony take place.

However, because William and Kate spend so much time officially representing the British monarchy at formal occasions, they are unlikely to be as openly affectionate in public as Harry and Meghan are known to be - they regularly held hands when attending engagements during their tenure as working royals.

Stanton explained that instead, eagle-eyed royal fans will see more understated displays of William and Kate's bond as they go about their work, still showing affection with "prolonged eye gazes" and reassuring pats on the back.
