Paul Mescal responds to hilarious 'running away' rumours over one-night stands

All of Us Strangers actor Paul Mescal has broken his silence over viral memes that have circulated the internet that claim he takes people on walking dates - but then bizarrely runs off.

The 27-year-old star appeared on the YouTube show titled Amelia Dimoldenberg‘s Chicken Shop Date and discussed his dating life. When asked about what he considers to be a romantic date, his response appeared to allude to the viral rumours. Speaking about his perfect date, he said: "I love walking. A good long walk is romantic to me." Amelia replied saying: "Simple pleasures,” to which Paul then agreed: "I’m a simple man."

At first glance his answer does not seem to hold much weight but those on social media claim he takes people for walks around north London and then runs away from them - although there is no evidence to support that claim. The rumours first started in December last year. The actor's career has soared since appearing in the miniseries Normal People and the film All of Us Strangers.

Starring alongside Andrew Scott, where they film sex scenes together, Paul told British Vogue that those scenes were some of the best parts of his career. Before Paul shot to fame, he became recognisable in Ireland for starring in a sausage advert for the brand Denny. The star is seen chowing down on a sausage in the advert.

And it was this role that Louis Theroux used to take a swipe at the actor. During a chat on The Louis Theroux Podcast, the host asked: "You got your big break on a sausage advert. How old were you?” Paul replied: "I was too old to have said yes to a sausage advert, but I was desperate… It was around [the time of Normal People], it was probably… let’s say 2018… I remember not knowing how the spit bucket works on set.”

Louis then interrupted: “Well I don’t think I know how that works. Because you do have to eat sausage.” Paul explained that he was expected to spit out the sausages after taking a bite, and continued: “I just remember feeling it was so rude to spit out your food. A guy would come up with a bucket and I was like ‘No no no, it’s fine’.”

In a bid to probe further, Louis added: "How much sausage did you have to [eat]?” And Paul revealed: “Probably in excess of about ten I’d say. Too many sausages to be eating at 8am in the morning.” The pair then burst into laughter before Paul said: "It’s something that people in Ireland reference a lot. To kind of bring me right back down.” Revealing his agenda, Louis admitted: “That’s more or less why I did it.”

After appearing on Normal People, Paul won a series of awards including Best Actor award from the TV BAFTAs. He is also expected to reach superstardom later this year when he plays the lead role in the Gladiator sequel.
