TV host Jeremy Clarkson has revealed the reason he quit The Grand Tour after 7 years - after news of his departure made headlines last year - and made it clear there's no feud between himself and his co-stars.

The programme hit the screens in 2016 after Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May bagged a deal with Amazon Prime to start a new series on the streaming service in the wake of their move from the BBC. Jeremy was dropped from Top Gear following a reported incident during filming where he'd punched a producer over a row on set, prompting Hammond and May to leave the show.

The series saw the trio embarking on a journey around the world and test-driving different vehicles on adventurous road trips, with Jeremy appearing in all five seasons. In December the TV stars announced they would be featured in the final special, set to air in 2024 - which Clarkson said felt right.

Revealing why he'd sensationally quit the show, the 63-year-old presenter says his decision came down to feeling exhausted all of the time and struggling to come up with new ideas for the TV show.

Speaking to The Times, he said: "I’ve driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else. We’ve done everything you can do with a car. When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air."

He added: "[The show] is immensely physical and when you’re unfit and fat and old, which I am, camping in Mauritania was a stretch," he admitted. As for any "feuding" with his co-stars, Clarkson made it clear there wasn't any. "We’ve spent more time in each other’s company than our families' over the last 25 years so I don’t think it would have lasted as long as it did if we’d hated each other as much as James likes to think," he quipped.

However, it may not be the end of the road for the trio as it has been said that "options are being explored for a new incarnation of the show".

Speaking about his future on TV, Jeremy said: "James May thinks there’s never been a more interesting time for how we move around and he’s probably right, but I don’t think it’s very interesting television,” he admitted.

"An electric car is no different from a chest freezer or a microwave oven. There’s no glamour or excitement. This week on Top Chest Freezer! I think it suits the written media more." The end of The Grand Tour followed the news that the BBC had decided to scrap Top Gear for the "foreseeable future" after host Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff was seriously injured in a crash during filming in 2022.
