They may be small, but some insects can be deadly to humans thanks to their fatal stings and ability to destroy crops.

Forget the likes of lions, great white sharks and other predators - insects are the most dangerous group of animals in the world and pose the biggest risk of death to humans. This is, in part, due to their ability to carry and spread deadly diseases, from malaria to Zika, Chagas and the black death. Here, we list the 10 deadliest insects has been compiled giving the most notorious insects on the planet.

Blister beetles

The blister beetle can be deadly to humans - but only if they it is eaten. The insect secretes a toxin which can cause skin blistering in humans. The liquid has been used to combat against warts and rabies, but is more commonly used as an aphrodisiac. the beetle's toxins can, however, still kill in large enough quantities.

Locusts

Locusts are not dangerous on their own, but their effect can be if they gather in large numbers - as they can devastate crops on a biblical scale devouring fields in a matter of minutes Locust swarms are triggered by a dry spell after rapid rainfall which causes vegetation to grow. Agricultural damage damage, however, can lead to famine and ultimately human fatalities.

The Assassin caterpillar

The Assassin caterpillar causes a number of fatalities and thr early stages of the giant silkworm moth has earned it the reputation as the world’s deadliest caterpillar. Its venom is in a sac at the base of each hollow bristle. And when it punctures the skin, the venom flows through and prevent blood clotting. its symptoms can cause a burning sensation, vomiting, kidney failure, internal bleeding, and even death in some cases which is rare.

Fire ants

Fire ants have more than 200 species and stick down onto a victim's skin before delivering a shot of powerful and painful venom, which some people can die from. Most victims, however, will only have a burning sensation where they were stung.

Hornets

The “murder hornet” is the world's largest wasp species and has caused fears it could become an established species in the UK and USA. Its brutal nickname is down to its perceived aggressiveness. They can be dangerous to humans, but are more likely to kill bees than humans. The species is often confused with the more well-known Asian hornet.

Hymenoptera

A group of deadly insects which are responsible for human deaths are Hymenoptera - which includes bees, wasps, and ants. A small number of people have an anaphylactic allergic reaction to bee stings which be fatal. There are ten reported deaths from wasp or bee sting reactions according to discoverwildlife.com

Kissing bugs

The pleasantly-named kissing bugs are found in the Americas and parts of Africa and Asia. They feed on vertebrate blood and pass bacteria, viruses and parasites among food sources. The parasite Trypanosoma cruzi causes Chagas disease. which infects 6­–7 million people around the world resulting in 10,000 deaths per year.

Fleas

The common flea brought the bubonic plague from infected rodents to humans and killed more than 25 million people in 14th century Europe. The disease carriers have even been used in biological warfare and the Japanese army are said to have air-dropped plague-infected fleas on Chinese cities in World War 2.

Tsetse flies

The Tsetse fly lives among humans in large areas of Africa. It carries sleeping sickness, a deadly disease which is transmitted by a bite. |The symptoms include fever, severe headaches, seizures, and disruption of the sleep cycle. If the symptoms are not treated they can be fatal.

Mosquitos

The title of the world's deadliest insect is claimed by the mosquito which may be small but has the power to develop a devastating impact. The insect kills more people every year than any other species. It is not mosquitos themselves that are deadly- but the parasites, bacteria, and viruses they carry. They transmit fatal diseases including yellow and dengue fever. - but the moist dangerous disease is malaria, caused by a blood-borne single-celled parasite. Malaria claimed an estimated 619,000 human lives in 2021.
