Ralph revealed of his animal interactions: “One of the scariest was I had to birth a foal in season three. So I was there at the back end of this massive horse with its steel feet next to my head. And at one point it had to be on its side and then it had to be rolled over (as) the foal was twisted."

He continued: "So I was lying Superman at the back end of this massive horse. So it did at one point flinch as well. And I shot across the other field because my head was right next to massive feet, and they always tell you, stay away from the back end of these big animals. And that is the place I always am."

"I'm always at the back end of cows and horses. So that was one of the scariest," he added.

Ralph leads the adaptation of Herriot’s vet adventures as a veterinarian in the 1930s Yorkshire Dales. He also stars alongside Anna Madeley, Samuel West and Rachel Shenton.

While the series is brand new to the United States, it has had a successful run in the UK since 2020. Over the years, the stars have had to work with a wide array of animals from dogs to sheep.

“We've had a few escapees, we've had flocks of sheep that have just gone selling off across the Yorkshire Dales when we've needed them. I mean, one of the hardest things I had to do was to call a dog Jess, the dog from 20 yards away. Jess come to me the first time she went to my right. Second time she went to my left. So the third time I was like, right, I'll catch her this time, Jess. So she came up right to the middle, great. And then she went clean through my legs. So calling a dog from 20 feet was one of the hardest things I had to do.”
