Netflix fans 'can't sleep' after gritty new crime series as it's 'just too good'

When infamous 'King of Cocaine' Pablo Escobar says 'The only man I was ever afraid of was a woman named Griselda Blanco' - you just know she must be one tough cookie.

And a new Netflix mini series chronicling the life of Griselda - a notorious Colombian drug lord in charge of a massive cocaine empire in Miami - does little to dispel such a ruthless reputation.

The show sees Sofia Vergara - renowned for her roles in Modern Family and America’s Got Talent - take centre stage as the titular 'Cocaine Godmother'. Practically unrecognisable with her subdued, downbeat look, she swans around the six-parter in minimal make-up, with her trademark brown hair all frizzy and curly. In short, you have never seen the 51-year-old like this before.

But then Griselda is a serious bit of telly about serious issues, with Sofia ably stepping up to such a dramatic role - and proving many doubters wrong in the process.

Netflix's official synopsis reads: "Griselda tells the story of a devoted mother who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. As the series dramatises, her lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her to navigate between the worlds of underground business and family."

Currently sporting an impressive 88 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a sparkling 8/10 on IMDB, it's clear Griselda is one drama that's not to be missed.

IMDB user mayamasonia awarded it 10/10, posting: "Sofia Vergara did an amazing job portraying Griselda through her different stages of life. It was amazing to see Sofia as a serious dramatic actress. She nailed it."

CinemaAmazing also gave it a maxium score, writing: "I confess that I was one of the people who was a little sceptical about the great Sofia Vergara taking on a dramatic role, after having spent 11 years with her in 'Modern Family', but in 'Griselda' she transforms completely and shows us what a fantastic actress she is - and it could earn her an Emmy."

Many viewers were utterly mesmerised by Griselda, and fell over themselves to share their praise on X, formerly known as Twitter :
