Is Palworld on NIntendo Switch or PS5? The future of the Steam hit explained

Palworld's release strategy is currently a very different beast, depending on if you want to play on Xbox, PC, or PlayStation.

Palworld has been a breakout success on both PC and Xbox platforms, but what is developer Pocketpair's plans for expanding to other platforms, and how keen will PlayStation and Nintendo be on its arrival?

Those who have started their Palworld journey on PC and Xbox are already getting acclimated with how the world works, its unique mix of sandbox survival, base building, and crafting, as well as what the best Pals in Palworld to catch early on are. For people looking to play on Nintendo and PlayStation, however, getting to grips with 2024’s first official breakout success isn't happening in the immediate future. That being said, Pocketpair has acknowledged fans clamouring for a Palworld PS5 release, but has been very quiet on the Nintendo Switch front; but it likely has nothing to do with the controversy surrounding Pokemon and the new game.

Palworld is built with Unreal Engine, which supports Nintendo's hardware but let's be real – it's a struggle with that console running games sometimes. The rumoured Nintendo Switch 2, of course, might be a different story. And then there's the glaring issue that Palworld is basically Pokemon with guns. That's not an IP you necessarily want muddying the waters with an established, child-friendly series like Pokemon. And the studio has made no mention of the Switch, while it's addressing the Palworld PS5 release directly.

This is where things seem a little more clearcut on the question of whether Palworld is coming to PS5. The answer is 'not right now', but the developer has said that while it doesn't have plans for [a Palworld PS5 release] at the moment," it's certainly not off the table. Over on the game's Steam FAQ page it goes on to say that, while it's not being worked on at the moment, it "will consider it during development".

Gunning for a PlayStation release

The good news is that Sony is standing by for a Palworld PS5 release, ready with open arms, as demonstrated by Sony indies boss, Shuhei Yoshida. Initially sending his congrats to Palworld devs, a fan hopped into the thread to essentially ask Yoshida if he'd get on Sony's arse to bring Palworld to PS5 as soon as possible – and he replied with a resounding "yes", tagging PlayStation's partner development team exec, Jingwen Zhu, in the tweet.

Meanwhile, an old tweet resurfaced from a Palworld dev who said the game wouldn't be on PlayStation – only Xbox and Steam – but they revisited it this week , clarifying, "The [old tweet] said Palworld may release on PS4, PS5, Xbox or PC. I replied that it won’t be on PlayStation, which was and still is currently true, and that it would be only on Xbox and Steam.

"Also still currently true. This was by no means a statement that Palworld will never come to PlayStation. Please don’t twist my words to perpetuate silly arguments. Thanks!"

Given that console exclusivity deals tend to last for around one year, that – combined with Pocketpair not outright ruling it out – suggests Palworld on PS5 is something we'll likely see down the line.

Palworld’s combination of survival elements and creature collection is something both these genres haven’t really toyed around with before; combined with the idea of a game like Pokemon featuring collectible critters but with guns, it's the perfect storm and the lack of a PS5 and Nintendo Switch release hasn't done anything to hinder the sales. Pocketpair has been sharing its milestones on Twitter, reporting that the title has sold over 6 million copies in the six days since launch.

So if you're on PC or Xbox Series X|S, you can see what all of the fuss is about yourself, and if you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you can download and play on it for free.
